Re: 2006 South Asia report for World Development Indicators

If superpower = military might and winning all the wars in their history, then India is a superpower. After all, USSR was considered a superpower and their people lived in squalor.

Re: 2006 South Asia report for World Development Indicators

haha.. all the haters frigging each other off over indian poverty. only happens in pakistan where 40% of the population lives under the poverty line (yeah, 40% is right. a dollar a day is but one metric).

the indian growth boom is finally starting to soar after years of promising plodding. the effects are visible on the streets in villages. middle class's needs based companies - home loan banks, auto manufacturers, cell phones, have exploded their businesses in the last few years. in fact, these companies trade every day at the NYSE. india is taking off, and yes, about time it did so too. so long, neighbour

The US-based Nasdaq stock market, home to many of the world’s leading technology stocks, has opened its first branch in India. The new Nasdaq office is in the information technology hub of Bangalore, and becomes Nasdaq’s fourth office outside New York after London, Tokyo and Brazil

“We want to give the existing Nasdaq-listed Indian companies a very high level of service and see that they are properly presented to US investors,” Mr Berkeley said.
“We want to assist other companies looking to list on the Nasdaq… the intention is to open a window for Indian companies to access global funds,” he added. There are currently three Indian technology and internet companies listed on the Nasdaq: Infosys Technologies, Satyam Infoway and Rediff.com.

Motorola Inc. will invest $100 million to build a handset and telecom equipment plant in India in a move aimed at countering rival Nokia Corp.'s dominance in the Indian market.
The U.S. electronics maker said Wednesday it would start work on the plant with an initial investment of US$30 million (€24 million), which would be scaled up to US$100 million (€78 million) in phases. The plant will be built near the southern Indian city of Madras.
The plant, which is expected to become operational next year, will make a wide range of handsets and other communications gear, a Motorola statement said.
The announcement follows plans by Nokia Corp., which is setting up a handset manufacturing plant in India, also near Madras, with an investment of US$150 million.
An overwhelming majority of nearly 100 million mobile phone users in India prefer Nokia handsets over Samsung’s, Motorola’s and Ericsson’s.
The latest announcement by Motorola, based in Schaumburg, Illinois, is part of the company’s efforts to boost its sluggish sales in one of the world’s fastest growing handset markets. India is adding 4 million new mobile phone subscribers every month. During a visit to India last year, Motorola chief Edward Zander admitted the company had failed to seize the opportunity in India.

  1. Time is not run by an Indian.
  2. India is much better off than what China was in 1985. So basically we are catching up really fast, and that too without taking away the freedom of the common people.

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced that it will set up a manufacturing facility for mobile devices at Chennai in India. The manufacturing unit in Chennai will be Nokia’s tenth mobile device production facility globally. Nokia anticipates investing an estimated USD 100-150 million in the India production plant.

“Establishing a new factory in India is an important step in the continuous development of our global manufacturing network. We selected Chennai to be the location for the factory thanks to the availability of skilled labor, friendly business environment, support from the state government, good logistics connections and overall cost-efficiency,” said Pekka Ala-Pietilä, President, Nokia.

Nokia’s new facility in Chennai is in the state of Tamil Nadu in the southern part of India. The construction work at the site of the manufacturing unit will start in April and production is expected to begin in the first half of 2006. Nokia foresees ramping up the factory gradually and the work force reaching approximately 2,000 employees when production is full scale.

Re: 2006 South Asia report for World Development Indicators

okay guys, just give India some break. Whether we like it or not, India has left us behind in getting the world's attention, money and is now being considered as future super-power. Our focus should not be pulling India down, rather push ourselves upwards, how can we improve from where we are, what mistakes India has made/is making so we can avoid them :)
