VIENNA (AFP) - A media watchdog on Wednesday described 2006 as the ‘most savage and brutal’ year on record for journalists with 100 media professionals killed across the world.
It was a ‘war on journalism’, said Johann Fritz, director of the International Press Institute.
“With 100 journalists killed, 2006 was the most savage and brutal year in the history of the modern media,” said Fritz in the IPI’s annual report.
Conflict-torn Iraq, where more than 150 media workers have died since the 2003 US-led invasion, topped the list as the world’s most dangerous place for the media for the fourth year. In 2006, 46 journalists died reporting the conflict.
In almost all cases, the deaths were targeted killings, the report added. Journalists were killed in 23 other nations last year with the second most deadly country being the Philippines, with 10 killings. The IPI study covered 180 countries. …

Re: 2006 Brutal Year for Journalists around the world
Not true in case of India…
In fact exactly opposite…our media brutally murdered all sensible news and discuccions and submitted itself to total commercialization.
While enjoying ‘over-freedom’ yes over-freedom…they have totally neglected the true purpose of free press.
An example from our free-flowing media ----
A boy named Prince in northern part of India falls in a road-pit-hole accidentally and whole media shows it 24 hour live as how the boy is being rescued…such was the media frenzy that they stage managed mass prayers for this and telecasted it live to make it more sensational.
(There are hundreds of Princes like him who are orphaned and forced to sleep on railway platforms)
It’s pathetic the organizations like IPI, are crying for media freedom (they may be right)… but at the same time they don’t want to do an intro-inspection and find that wherever they have been given freedom they have mis-used it.
Difference bewteen Media and Prostitution is narrowing down.![]()
