LUCKNOW: Two girls were burnt to death in sectarian rioting between Hindus and Muslims sparked by the death of a youth in India’s most populous state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Monday.

“Over 100 houses were set ablaze in a Hindu-Muslim clash in which two girls were charred to death,” Prem Prakash, a police official told AFP.

The incident in Pratapgarh, 200 kilometres southeast of the state capital Lucknow, came after a Hindu youth was gunned down by unidentified people in a village market Sunday evening.

“The murder triggered a communal flare up when Hindus armed with rods and sticks torched houses of Muslims,” Prakash said. “Riot police have been sent to the village to control the situation,” he said. “Over 100 people have been arrested. The situation is still tense.” Some 13 percent of Uttar Pradesh’s 166 million population are Muslims.

Last month, three people were killed in sectarian violence in the Muslim dominated city of Aligarh while another four were killed in Lucknow.

Two young girls were burnt alive and nearly 100 houses torched in an Uttar Pradesh district as rival Hindu and Muslim groups clashed over the murder of a youth.

The violence in three villages of Pratapgarh district, about 150 km from the Capital, took place on Sunday evening following the murder of Ashish Pathak, a close aide of the local ruling Samajwadi Party legislator.

His uncle, Shashidhar Pandey, also suffered bullet injuries, but was declared out of danger later in the day.

Pandey, the sole witness to the killing, identified Pathak’s assailants, triggering the large-scale violence.

With active support of the ruling party legislator, the goons went on a retaliatory attack, burning down Muslim houses in Gurwa, Badlu and Subedar villages, police sources said.

Eyewitnesses claimed that two teenaged girls were burnt alive after being flung into the blaze by the attackers.

According to the police, even though the clash had not aggravated into any kind of communal violence, an alert had been sounded and additional forces had been deployed to prevent any escalation in tensions.

“The girls were not thrown into the fire but got caught in the blaze that engulfed their house,” Pratapgarh District Magistrate RS Verma said.

Blaming the incident on “old enmity” between two families, he said, “The tension dates back to 1997 when Ashish was named as one of the key accused in the murder of a local Muslim, Jumman. His son Sohrab, who was then just a minor, had vowed to avenge the father’s death, which he accomplished by gunning down Ashish.”

Verma, who was camping in Gurwa village, where most of the houses were set ablaze, was confident that the situation would not acquire a communal colour.

“We have enough force stationed here to ensure that there was no recurrence of violence,” he claimed.

The police had already arrested some of the suspects and more would follow, the official added.

Yes, we do have a communal problem. I think the only way to solve it is as follows:

  1. The USA / Europe solution: All the people should come up to some level of education and learn to respect other people's religious belief's.

or

  1. Arab / Islamic countries solution: No minorities at all.

I think in India soln # 2 is impossible and only hope is soln # 1 and my belief it will take atleast another two generations before the thinking level of the people will raise.

At least two generations? Okay.. then there's no point in discussing any communal tensions in India. Indians should hurry up with their procreation efforts so that this milestone of two generations is reached within a couple of decades..

We have a number of predominantly Muslim states with sizable non-Muslim populations. For example, Malaysia, Indonesia, Dubai, Bangladesh etc. Is intercommunal violence as common a phenomenon in these countries as it is in India?

There are incidents of communal violence, but moslty it is still peaceful.
I know that most Indians do not like this (U can even see this in the forum), but somehow some members of communities are able to instigate people.

What victory said is the way India is going in. I do not believe that we should have military rule nor we should become non-secular. We should not do it, because thats against our religion as well.
But I think India has to make sure that people who instigate communal violence or participate in it must get harshest punishment.

Ur argument can be used in the oppsite way too, namely, muslim as a minority cannot live peacefully among nonmuslims.

vineshvk, if that is what Indians believe - Muslim minority can not live peacefully among non-Muslims- then we should not be surprised to read such news. My 'argument' was in reply to the point 2 of victory in which he claimed that, for Muslims, 'no minority at all' is the solution. I just showed him sizable minority populations in Muslim countries. :)

narayan, I agree with you. But how can you prevent such riots in future if your secular democracy couldn't punish people like Advani and Modi? It seems that the system rewards such people.

I see political motives behind yet another riot/massacre. It looks like that Ashish was killed due to political opposition (could be "Muslim" party, or Muslim members of a party etc ) but his uncle turned it in other direction i.e. towards Muslims in general.

I agree in general to what cpatain is saying. But sometimes it is difficult to really comprehend such a disaster when such a thing happens in ones family. The brain gets blocked.
I must say this - The hindu guy who instigated the violence should be punished by law for this. Even the guys who accompanied the instigator should be punished (although the punishment would be different)
Also I must say that the guys who shot the hindu guy should also be caught and punished.
No one should be allowed to take the law in their own hands.

Something happened and they all are here to blame India. Samajwadi Party in UP is an open mouth organ of Muslims. Its leader Mulayam Singh Yadav is not hesitant in calling him Myan Mulayam and if his party men are hooliganning…..they must honor it.

How such incidents take shape in their country? In fact Hindus have degraded themselves by declining to the ‘eye for an eye level’.
They must call it a religious war, or Jihad, something like that instead of calling it mere riots.

I feel sorry for those two ** Indian girls ** who have become victims of this mutual religious war.
