Re: 1st time delivery (normal)
My first was actually the easiest! I stayed home far too long because they really try to push "epidural" at the hospital - I'm SOOO scared of needles Id rather die than let em stick me in the back! anyway, he was born 20 min after we got to hospital, my doc couldnt even be there in time so an intern delivered him! It was great, they got me settled in the labor room, I told them I had to "go" but they wouldnt let me get up....they went to get me a bedpan and my water broke...then out comes baby! Drs and nurses came madly scrambling! Since it was somewhat uncontrolled, I had a pretty big tear. This was pretty painful so I had half a dose of Nubain painkiller in my IV while they fixed it up.
Try not to worry. I had 2 more deliveries, the second one was really bad and the 3rd was pretty bad. Something I noticed with these 2 deliveries was that when I got to 3cm, they broke my water to speed things along. Both times, the effect was that it stopped labor. It felt like there was less for the contractions to push against. So they started Pitocin....this is an evil drug! Natural contractions seem much easier to bear. But even in the worst of it all, YES it IS endurable! Since the pains come and go, you get to take a break between, prepare yourself for the next one. I never had epidural but I did ask for half-doses of Nubain. There is also demerol but I heard from so many people that all demerol does is make you nauseous and groggy. Nubain really helped. I had a half-dose because half goes into your IV line, the other half is a big needle in the butt (I declined that part).
Recovery, for me, was pretty easy. You get so tired and hungry but while youre in the hospital, all you need to do is lay in bed and have people bring you the baby and food food food! The lack of feeling "down there" is a pain in the neck...it took me a while to be able to control my bladder, something pretty common. You do these "Kegel exercises" to get those muscles back into shape. We can talk about these later if you want.
Many congratulations and good luck to you! May it go along easily for you!

LABOUR is pretty much bearable...........
and thsi is coming form someone who ahs a low pain threshold!!!!!!!!!
the worst thing i found was the internal examinations i did not anticipate them being so painful!!!
but all pain is forgotten once u hold/see ur baby!!1
i know how i suddenly felt as if i was floatinG!!
