Ian Bell has been dropped from England’s one-day and Twenty20 squads for the ongoing series against Pakistan in the UAE. The squads feature two new players in left-arm spinner Danny Briggs and batsman Jos Buttler. Batsman Alex Hales has been named in the Twenty20 team.
The allrounder Tim Bresnan, who arrived in Dubai midway through the third Test, has been named in both squads, but his availability is subject to a fitness test following his rehabilitation from an elbow injury.

Briggs, Hales and Buttler have been touring with the England Lions in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
“We have selected two squads that include both experienced international players and younger players who have performed strongly for England Lions in recent months and deserve an opportunity to further test themselves against quality opposition,” national selector Geoff Miller, said. “Playing against Pakistan in the UAE will be challenging but it is important that these players continue to develop their skills so that we are able to make strides in limited-overs cricket particularly on the subcontinent.”
England were whitewashed 3-0 in the Tests that finished on Monday. Bell, despite coming off a strong 2011 with the bat, struggled in the Tests, averaging just 8.50.

Re: 1st ODI: England v Pakistan at Abu Dhabi Feb 13, 2012

While I have great respect for Younis Khan the test batsman, he was never really a good ODI player and the following comments/stats support that view.

In limited overs cricket you don't need all hitters. Esp. in the middle period you need good grafters or consolidators who are atleast good at rotating the strike and milking singles and twos (cf. Miandad) but as I have said repeatedly there is a sameness about Misbah and Younis's style of play and you just cannot afford to play both in the same team. Both waste too many deliveries when they first come to the crease and struggle to rotate the strike. Misbah is the captain so has to play but Younis unless he improves his game should make way for someone-else in both limited overs formats

Even in the last world cup in 2011, there is no way in hell that Younis deserved a place in the squad ahead of Yousuf (a much better ODI player and his record speaks for itself)

[QUOTE]
Boggles my mind that Younis Khan has played 221 ODI matches while being perhaps the poorest international #3 of any major team during that period.

Look at the stats against major teams:

In 23 games against Australia, averages 15.77 at a strikerate of 57
In 17 games against England, averages 28.86, strike rate of 71
In 22 games against NewZealand, averages 27, strike rate of 68
In 34 games against SouthAfrica, averages 26.48, strikerate of 67
In 16 games against West Indies, averages 28.80, strikerate of 66

It is only against Srilanka (averages 32) and India (averages 39) that
he comes CLOSE to having respectable stats.

To have played over 200 matches at the most important position in the line-up with those stats and test match strikerates, and STILL be thought of as a "dependable" batsman is an incredible feat of public relations. Not only does he bring the game to a dead halt but he goes nowhere while doing so. Bring ANYONE from the domestic circuit and give him 200+ games and watch become a reliable, semi-decent batsman while scoring at a fair strikerate.
No other major team would have tolerated such performance standards for this stretch of time for a top order player who isn't an all-rounder. It's one of the major reasons we aren't a top ODI side.

Younis, Imran Farhat and Cheema should not be included in any limited over format. Simple is that.
