Wasim Akram was on top primarily due to two factors. He had become the first bowler in the history of one day cricket to take two hat tricks, and had recently been in the limelight because of his terrific stroke play towards the end of the innings (In the context of this ad, specifically, the six he hit to help Pakistan lift the Nehru Cup and also the 49* he made at the end of the innings in the 1990 Austral-Asia cup final in Sharjah)
In this ad, there are two joker type teenagers who watch wasim akram jog around Race Course Park in Lahore. Then one of them goes to Akram and asks “Wasim Bhai aap thaktey nahin hain?”
Wasim Akram starts replying even before the question is fininshed “Naheen main cigarette nahin peeta”.
This ad has coined a popular standard reply that anyone will give you if you ask them the question **“Aap thaktey nahin hain?” ![]()

These two lines are extremely popular even today. Towards the end of his career, many also referred to Wasim Akram as ‘Wasim Bhai’ primarily as an offshoot from this ad.
The interesting thing was that Wasim Akram did smoke, and he was also seen smoking in the dressing room once in a county match in 1992. That made many people ask the validity of the public service announcement that had been aired in 1990. Yet, it was harmless fun.
I think one of the joker type teens in the ad eventually grew up to be an actor in a PTV play or something. I am quite sure this ad was not the place where they found any talent in him. ![]()
