Deadly crash halts 401 express
In Canada one day, 17-year-old from Pakistan killed; hundreds of motorists stuck in express lanes
A 17-year-old female visitor from Pakistan, who had been in Canada only a day, was killed this morning when she was ejected from a minivan, which then rolled over and crushed her on Highway 401 near Dufferin St.
Earlier reports that a driver had fled the scene proved to be false.
All lanes have been reopened at the location of the crash, which closed the eastbound express lanes near the Yorkdale Shopping Centre for more than three hours.
OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley said the victim has been identified as Marina Inam, who was about to turn 18.
The driver, a 17-year-old unidentified female from Mississauga, was attempting a lane change at the same time as a grey vehicle, Woolley said.
Investigators are unsure whether there was a collision, but the minivan swerved to miss the other vehicle and then rolled over, he said.
Neither the driver nor another male passenger was hurt. Both had been wearing seat belts.
The dead woman, who was sitting in the back seat, wasn’t buckled in.
Woolley said the accident was “completely survivable” had she been wearing her seat belt.
“It’s unlikely she would’ve been injured at all,” he said. “That’s what so frustrating. Passengers don’t think of the risk of riding in a vehicle. This is the tragedy."
Two of the four express lanes opened about 1:20 and the other lanes opened about 2:30 p.m.
The accident caused a traffic nightmare for several hours as police closed the eastbound express lanes west of Allen Rd.
The accident happened at 11:11 a.m.

This is soo tragic..i cannot imagine what the family must be going through after loosing a must at such a small age. The most shocking thing was that she’s been in canada for only 1 day.
