16 including UK soldier killed in Iraq

BAGHDAD: A spate of Baghdad bombings killed at least 16 in Iraq on Monday, as US private Lynndie England pled guilty in Texas to abuse charges related to a picture showing her holding a naked Iraqi prisoner on a leash.

… A day after a suicide bomber killed 25 people and wounded 50 at a Kurdish funeral in northern Iraq, bombers struck again in Baghdad, killing at least 15 and wounding 17, security and hospital officials said.

Of the four car bombs that exploded on Monday, one targeted a convoy carrying a commander of Iraq’s elite police commandos. General Rashid Flaih escaped unhurt but two men in his escort were wounded.

Another car bomb blew up in a fashionable district of the busy city centre, killing nine civilians and wounding 10, an interior ministry official said. Two policemen and two civilians also died and five people were wounded when a third car bomb exploded in the eastern Zayuna district, security sources said.

In an attempt to crack down on the violence, Iraqi and US forces carried out a series of raids in the Baghdad area, arresting 84 suspected insurgents. North of the capital, four Iraqi soldiers were killed in a bomb explosion. And to the south, near Yusufiya, a truck bomb also went off against an Iraqi army convoy, killing one and wounding five.

A British soldier was also killed by a roadside bomb explosion in southern Iraq on Monday, bringing to 88 the number of British troops who have died since the March 2003 invasion.

If that's what they're wondering, they are barking up the wrong tree and bombs will probably continue to rain down. What they should be wondering is what have they done to their Sunni brothers since they are the ones blowing up innocent Iraqis.

The goras could wipe out the entire country by the time I finish this post, is that what you want? The whooping of Iraqis right now is being dealt by the sunni terrorists, not the US.

Doesn’t matter what I want. Wiping out the country doesn’t suit American interests. Still, doesn’t take away from the fact that right now they resemble a mockery of military. Seem to be taking inspiration from the Indian Air Force

Just for the record, what has the Muslim world done for Iraq lately? I have a number of concrete suggestions that might help the Iraqi people, while offering little comfort to the US.

1) The Muslim world could offer a special envoy to negociate a fair settlement to legitimate issues that the Sunnis might have in hopes of integrating Sunnis into a full govenrmental role.

2) Wealthy Arab states could create a special Red Crescent fund to help and assist women children orphans, the sick, preganant women etc. This Red Crescent effort would be protected by Fatwas from leading religious scholars, who offer protection from violence.

3) This same fund would help fund innoculations, hospital improvements, sanitation projects, and damaging and threatening these projects would be declared Haram by a wide breadth of religious and cultural leaders.

What we have currently is a situation created by violence that makes the sanctions look tame. If you were against the sanctions then you must be against the current situation. Yet we don't hear a peep about the hardship of common Iraqis today, as their situation is being threatened daily by other violent Muslims, and is therefore "OK", and subject to the brotherhood gag rule. To think that aiding a brother iraqi is tantamount to helping the US is just a bizzare leap in logic.

It seems as if the entire strategy of the resistance is to sink the US into a quagmire without regard to the consequences to the iraqi people. Extreme brutality and extraordinary violence is somehow advancing the Islamic cause. This is a strategy that is doomed, even if it succeeds.

This thread is a microcosm for the problem Ohioguy outlines above. Sunni terrorists are killing innocent Muslims on the streets and at funerals and all the brave contigency can do here is spouse hatred for white people, admonish the US military and wish the Iraqis to suffer because they don't want to have to do 'dirty work' (aka helping their brothers in need, aka NO work). The concept of an ummah is bs. Go ahead, cheer on your murdering brothers while your peaceful ones fight for a representative country without your help or even pity.

In the unlikely event that the US is ruled by a brutal, sadistic tryant in 2099, I would welcome any country that made the sacrifice to free us and provide us with a freely elected, representative government. I suspect and would hope our allies around the world would support and assist us. But I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on the ummah, I suspect China or Chile would free us before that ever happened.

Freedom isn't cheap, and unless you are living in the west where other people fought and died for those freedoms, you don't know jack about it. Don't be so melodramatic about the destruction, there is a choice now for Iraqis to go forward or backward. You advocate backwards since you can't stand to see the US coming out of this 'victorious'. What a shame you'd sacrifice the Iraqi people because of false pride.
