16,000 Kashmiris Languishing in Indian Jails on Dubious Charges

Re: 16,000 Kashmiris Languishing in Indian Jails on Dubious Charges

It's not just for the heck of it...it's territorial greed and a pissing contest with Pakistan.

Your entire claim to Kashmir is based on the wishes of the Dogra maharaja...a widely-hated foreign despot who's only claim to authority over Kashmir was that his ancestors purchased it in a British treaty. There is clear indication that his unilateral action went against the will of most of the population, and against the wishes of the elected legislative assembly (I don't believe that's the case in any other Indian state). Knowing full well that they were ruling over a largely hostile population, the Indian government decided that the best course of action would be to suppress popular democracy as much as possible and install handpicked governments...which they proceeded to do for the next 40 years...culminating in the debacle that was the 1987 election, the proverbial 'straw that broke the camel's back.' The Kashmir movement predates both India & Pakistan, and would exist regardless of whether or not Pakistan was involved.

If you have other states that were forced to join your country in 1947, against the will of most of the population...and were subsequently bludgeoned into submission and denied their basic democratic rights, then they have every right to rebel as well.
