NEW DELHI - The 15-year-old son of two doctors successfully performed a filmed Caesarean section birth under his parents’ watch in southern India in an apparent attempt to set a record as the youngest surgeon, officials said Thursday.

Instead, the boy’s father could be stripped of his licenses and may face criminal charges.

Dr. K. Murugesan showed a recording of his son performing a Caesarean section to an Indian Medical Association chapter in the southern state of Tamil Nadu last month, said Dr. Venkatesh Prasad, secretary of the association. The video showed Murugesan anesthetizing the patient.

Murugesan told the medical association that he wanted to see his son’s name in the Guinness Book of World Records.

However, Amarilis Espinoza, a spokeswoman for the record book, said in an e-mail response to a question from The Associated Press that the organization doesn’t monitor or endorse such feats because it would encourage the practice of “bad medicine.”

The mother and baby were reported to have come through the surgery successfully.

“We were shocked to see the recording,” Prasad told the AP, adding that the IMA told Murugesan that his act was an ethical and legal violation.

Murugesan owns and runs a maternity hospital in the city of Manaparai, Prasad said in a telephone interview from Manaparai. The family could not be immediately reached for comment.

Murugesan, who could possibly be prevented from practicing and face criminal charges for allowing his son to perform the operation, expressed no regret and accused the Manaparai medical association of being “jealous” of his son’s achievements, Prasad added.

“He said this was not the first surgery performed by his son and that he had been training him for the last three years,” said Prasad.

Prasad said that his team had reported the surgery to the state’s top medical association in state capital, Chennai.

State health secretary V.K. Subburaj told reporters Thursday that the government would investigate.

“We’ll get the report and then we’ll see whether there are any violations … prima facie it looks like there is a big violation,” he said.

“We will definitely take action against the concerned medical officers.”

Crazy endangering the lives of patients. I remember a similar incident on indian TV show where they filmed a seven years old driving a four wheel on public street with all the traffic going on to break a record.

Re: 15 year old performs Surgery in India

I wonder if the woman knew who was gonna perform the surgery. If yes then she is hell of a brave woman, if no then doc can expect a huge lawsuit up his bak.

Neem Hakim sala…

Re: 15 year old performs Surgery in India

If woman's consent was taken than I do not see any harm in it. He was trained & being supervised :)

Re: 15 year old performs Surgery in India

nope, violation of child labor :p

Re: 15 year old performs Surgery in India

This reminds me.... my father once denied a surgery on the operation bed in Aga Khan Hospital when he didn't see the doctor (Dr. Talathi was his name I believe) he scheduled the surgery with. He kept asking for the doctor and they kept telling him he will be here shortly. He refused to take anesthetics before he saw the doctor. Guess what, he never showed up. My dad and all the family members went home without the surgery. My bro did family practice there years ago so he was able to make some calls from the U.S and get thing shuffled around. Some people ended up getting fired over this. The doctor personally called my dad and appologized. Evedently, he didn't even know about the surgery. He did the surgery on a later date.

Re: 15 year old performs Surgery in India

he had license to practice surgery?

Re: 15 year old performs Surgery in India

the kid should be forced to perform a lobotomy on his dad.
the kid is a tool.
the dad is a real...tool

Re: 15 year old performs Surgery in India

this goes against medical ethics and is a violation every which way u look at it.....so even if the woman in question consented the "son" is not licenced to practice.....

im med skool we were allowed to operate under proper supervision but then again only with the consent of the patient.

**The fact that this "person" has been training his son to "operate" since he was 12 yrs old verges on barbaric **

......He should not only be stripped of his licence but a full investiagtion made into all the times he used humans as "guinea pigs" to "train" his son to become Doogie Howser !

Re: 15 year old performs Surgery in India

a fifteen year old will probably be about three times the age of the worlds youngest ever surgeon!

Re: 15 year old performs Surgery in India

Look at +ve side.. technolgy can be used in places where professional are not available.. people can be utilized with professional supervision from a distance to save lives..

Re: 15 year old performs Surgery in India

Its amazing that this shyt head surgeon even thought of his son/himself being praised for such stupidity.

Re: 15 year old performs Surgery in India

Why does a degree matter if an informed consent was taken and woman and her baby came out just fine? This is all paper work which can at times screw up people rather than benefiting them. You don’t necessarily need a medical license to perform a surgery. Someone I know owns a birthing center; her assistant performs c sections just fine. The guy has no medical training and was hired for handling instruments only. She says she trusts him enough that would let him do his daughter if needed.
I don’t see anything unethical about what was done but expecting your name in world records for an illegal medical practice is stupid.

Re: 15 year old performs Surgery in India

OK then what about oh sh1t scenerios?
What if something goes wrong?
I am an engineer by profession but I am sure surgeon don't go through years and years of practice for nothing. What they do in all those years is to deal with "oh sh1t" scenerios.

Re: 15 year old performs Surgery in India

Maybe the child is gifted? Anybody ever seen Doogie Howser MD?

Re: 15 year old performs Surgery in India

If he is "gifted" then he should've gone thru the proper channels to become a licensed surgeon...his genius doctor parents should've recognized his brilliance way early on and put him thru right schooling.

Anyone who has watched a procedure being done enough times, can do the same after a while, but does that make it right? Can anyone with some experience open up their own clinic and start treating patients? What was the motivation for this doctor to have his son do the surgery? The record alone, and that to me is despicable.

The subcontinent, at least Pakistan, already has a problem of 'compoders' running clinics, and chances are they do more harm than good because of their lack of medical knowledge. If there is a system in place, it should be followed with proper checks & balances. I hope this doctor gets what he deserves.

Re: 15 year old performs Surgery in India

It could be any or none of the above. How did the parents raise the teenager? Did they like typical british asian parents leave the child to be raised as a brit and then one day suddenly decided the child should get in touch with his roots? Or did the parents instill their religious, moral and cultural values (without double standards) in the child from the time he was born?

When the teenager goes back to his "parents homeland", most people would judge him based on his character and his ability to interact, communicate and connect with people in the "parents homeland". If that teenager knows nothing about the "parents homeland" (thanks to the parents) and doesnt speak the language of the "parents homeland" people then unfortunately he could be treated an outcast. But in a good sort of way. Like you would treat E.T. You dont understand what he says or does but you'll try to be nice to him.

Would they hate him? That depends on the level of arrogance he conducts himself with (the kind that says i'm brit born and raised so im better than you paindus).

Would they pity him? Yes some woudl pity him that he has been raised so disconnected with his roots.

Would they envy him? Some might, given that his upbringing has been so priviliged (growing up in the west and all).

So, when are you leaving?
