14 weeks operation

Hi all,

a friend of mine has been told she is expecting twins, she went for a check up yesterday and was informed that she would need to have a small operation that would involve stitches just to ensure her babys are secure???

I have never heard of this? is this right?

Re: 14 weeks operation

Although what you mentioned is kinda vague, but sometimes if there is a previous history of miscarriage due to cervical incompetence, then to ensure it doesn't happen again ,a suture/stitch is placed to prevent it...usually during the second trimester.
Maybe thats what your friend has been told.
Inshallah all the best to her...:)

its her first pregnancy, she has no one here, and i have not had any kids so no expert advise from me :bummer:

as far as i know, all is ok, but she will be required to have this at 14 weeks, i think she is 10 - 12 weeks at the moment, she did say she will go back to home and have it done there, but the Dr said she would not allow her to fly?

Re: 14 weeks operation

The doctor must have told her what kinda procedure they are planning to do,and hopefully whatever it is will be in the best of interest for the mother and the babies,Inshallah.

Re: 14 weeks operation

i thinks its best if she doesnt fly and follows the doctors advise, but i have heard thts its a pretty safe thing, usually only done if u have problems with the cervix like chip6 has mentioned :)

Re: 14 weeks operation

It sounds to me like her doc wants to do a Cerclage which is a stitch to close the cervix. This helps prevent the babies from being born way too early. Many women who require cerclage are also put on bed rest durin the later stage of pregnancy.

If she needs this to be done then yes, its a very good idea not to take a trip on a plane.

She should definitely have it done. My mom had an incompetent cervix but it wasn't diagnosed until she had two stillbirths and a miscarriage---once the baby reached a certain weight the cervix would basically 'give out' and she would go into labor. Cerclage is very safe and simple and the best way to ensure that the babies have enough growth time in the womb before being born.

Re: 14 weeks operation

If your friend is wanting to go home then she is likely afraid of the whole situation.
Bring her here and let her read the replies.
Help her do some research on the net.
Offer to visit the doctor with her and encourage her to follow the advice.

She is mA fortunate to have the opportunity of giving birth to twins.
May Allah guide her and make the process easy for her, ameen!
