100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

some more details about the 100MW solar plant that PMLN is boasting about these days.

the article says that if we take into account limited no of hours this plant will be able to run each day given its dependency on sunlight and the loses it has to bear being a solar plant to convert dc current to ac current by placing inverters, its actual production capacity is only 18MW.

so 150 million us dollars will be spent to produce not 100MW of solar power as we have been told but only 18MW. that is $8MM per MW whereas coal plant would have cost you $2MM per MW and a gas plant would cost you around 1MM per MW.

so then why we went for a solar plant in that case? well because solar plant could be finished in 10 months and it allowed shahbaz shrif to make publicity noise where as gas or coal plant would have taken 2-3 years but at least it would have given you 100MW all the time at 1-4 times less expenses.

can someone challenge these findings? if not shame on you shahbaz sharif

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

to avoid any confusion, what we are talking above is the net capacity factor of a power plant. Capacity factor is the ratio of its actual output over a period of time, to its potential output if it were possible for it to operate at full nameplate capacity continuously over the same period of time. To calculate the capacity factor, take the total amount of energy the plant produced during a period of time and divide by the amount of energy the plant would have produced at full capacity.

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

Commission and safe kick backs for these pigs is new phenomenon for paki corrupt politicians. panchi pai kept on opening such threads perhaps without realizing that he is actually promoting and legalizing corruption on one hand and making paki public ch… on the other hand.

Some one raised a question about why QAS of Sindh CM not doing anything about it, the answer is he is not Punjabi and do not have access to have such huge foreign exchange.

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

Well you may need to be a Punjabi to get funds for such projects but you definitely don’t need to be a Punjabi to be incompetent and corrupt and that’s what QAS and his gang is.

On topics, Sharif’s clown prince Abid Sher Ali said in of the shows that this project is a game changer for the entire region as this is one of the biggest solar power projects in Asia and most cost effective (which solar power can never be with current technology). Apparently this project will grow to include 100MW every year (or something like that). I wouldn’t believe anything coming out of that man but how can such people blatantly lie about capacity, costs etc and get away with the lies without confrontation from hosts.

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

Perhaps you did not understand my post. If such huge foreign exchange is placed to the disposal of Sind CM, the end result would be the same; Foreign kick backs. Historically such huge foreign exchange has always been under disposal of a ‘Punjabi’ where a PM, CM (Punjab), a bureaucrat or a military high official. There is no doubt about it.

In Pakistan, the so called most corrupt, innovator, competent is corrupt. Unless such projects are highly audited and researched for cost:benefit analysis, no such project should be initiated.

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

I was expecting similar thread as that of nundi pur project . Waht is going on with that mriacle of modern history

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

100MW is definitely ‘peak’ power output of the plan, the way our power demand is it will produce max power at max demand time as well (esp in summer days). The battery/storage system is needed if not all power produced is utilized. If solar cells are aligned in a particular way they keep producing power from sun rise to sunset. For such large solar farming the geo area must be selected so there are no mountains/hills to block sunlight and max utilization of solar energy is done.

If you take into account 20% inverter losses = 100MW x 0.8 = 80MW,
, and solar energy used in 14 hours out of 24 hours = 80 MW x 14/24 = 46.66 MW (daily power production of the plant in summer)
@Zero_one may shed more light as he has actually deployed one himself.

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

Its the same thing if we consider this project with Nandipur and the terms the govt has signed with Qatar for the LNG project.

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

As mentioned by author power does not turn on and off at full rather it starts at lower value in the morning n reaches peak in the afternoon.

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

Despite I being very poor at maths, isnt the cost of project i.e $131 million is equal to Rs. 13.3 billion ? But author of this article is repeatedly writing it Rs. 133 billion and doing cost/benefit analysis with coal powered plant based upon Rs.133 billion ?that solar

No doubt that renewable is much expensive than conventional like coal, nuclear and the cheapest hydel but major consultants of this projects are German Companies which herself is now producing 6% of its energy mix with Solar (about 38,000 MW).

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

^ correct. But other points are correct too. Efforts are not in correct direction rather on the showsha side..

Anyways atleast there is some effort. What we can do if they take all this 133 Mi to their pockets…

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

panchi pai I have yet to see such project in a country where these panels are manufactured.

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

I’ve financed several renewable projects in Pakistan - both solar and wind. The Pakistan government gives sovereign guarantees, backed up by national bank and MCB (to avoid circular debt). I finance a company that sets these energy parks up, locks in subsidies and then we package them and sell them on to pension and insurance funds. About 40% returns in 6 months. We do similar things in India, Ghana, UK, US, Germany etc. There is massive scope for renewable energy.

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

This is the most valid complaint in the OP.

Maths is shaky, at best. Everyone knows solar power is more expensive than coal based plants to ‘generate’ electricity. But that’s not the point of solar plants anyways.

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

Wud be great to hear from a professional. In a country where project like kalabagh can be proved as non viable . is this plant feasible . Special if we ignore the green energy benefit. Can you quantify. Wud be heartening if it is so

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

Depending on availability of good grade coal, the cost of electricity generated solar PV panel systems is normally around twice as expensive as coal based plants (even in countries with minimal corruption), but that’s not why they are becoming popular. You save tons on environmental costs and health care costs (this saving is debatable in Pakistan).

Re: 100MW solar plant..lets talk abt real facts

Thats why i mentioned in my msg if we ignore green energy benefits. AT this cut throat competition time , lets burn all our coal and be developed . Once our coal will finish , we will also turn towards green energy like Europe.
