10 years ago today

driving to work listening to music, switched to radio while changing cd and heard this shock jock dj talk about the tower being hit, thought it was one more of his crazy ass things, put another cd in, switched to radio again wondering if it was true, just at the same time as the second plane hit, heard the same dj talking about it, was annoyed at a bad joke, turned it off..did not realize it was true until I got to my client site. had some of my colleagues busy plugging away, and who had not even heard about it. was total shock. In the shock and sorrow, I also knew at that moment, things in the coming months and years may become personally challenging for me. offices in downtown chicago were emptied since Arthur Andersen used to be in a tall building, client site was a suburban corporate park, but no one could concentrate and all went home.

you?

I was hanging out with my betrothed in a big media shop in Lahore when saw the blasts in news, he got all excited and I thought "what are you getting all excited for?" and got busy again in shopping, bought President Ayub's autobiography and left the shop to find a good place for eat in.

Re: 10 years ago today

I was in grade 5 and on my way home from school when I heard some people talking about some sort of attack. When I came home, I saw the TV was on and my mom was watching the news. My mom told me planes had flown into the these big buildings in New York.

Re: 10 years ago today

the strange thing is that in my mind i was thinking of Quaid e Azam that morning and that the night before while reading i was shocked at the circumstances of his passing and thought that the way Liaquat ali khan and then fatima jinnah died, things in Pak have been screwed up from the beginning. I was going to post on that here but then it all got lost with the events of the day which consumed our attention

I was on an AA flight departed from Heathrow (having just left Khi), headed home to Texas..plane was rerouted to Toronto, we were stuck in the airport for 3 days, I didn't know a soul there...had NOTHING but my purse, no change of clothes, no charger for my phone...did not quite know what was going on, caught glimpses on tv's...was the absolute scariest time of my life, once the details of the tragedy started coming through, a little part if me died that day....Never Forget...

Re: 10 years ago today

I was in Quetta at the time and a couple friends had come over. Saw everything but had no idea that the reaction would be so strong.

Re: 10 years ago today

In kindergarten.

Re: 10 years ago today

Was in Junior High, but took the day off the go to the adjacent building for the citizenship test. Told dad the buildings were on fire and he said "Don't worry beta its only a fire they'll take it out soon chalo lets go" Went to the city then later found out it was the actual terrorist attacks. We were stuck in traffic couple of aves down from the attack all while listening the threatening news on the radio. I honestly thought some army was gonna come in and there was going to be actual war with tanks and what not. I was so scared kept looking out of the window to see where the planes had hit. I can relate this experience only to that of when i ate some bad pakorays at the Gujrawala train station and couldn't find a bathroom. Shudders

Re: 10 years ago today

I was working at client site this lady broke the news to everyone , someone plugged in a small tv and everybody started watching it , once we all got all the details everybody went to work. In the evening when I turned on TV at home then I realized the gravity of situation.
Unfortunately I and my family were supposed to fly to California for a wedding so I had taken two weeks vacation. Which started the next day of attack so I was at home watching every detail of attacks , expert comments and what not for next couple of days. After 2 days when the flights resumed we flew to CA for that wedding. I saw the ad hock security arrangements being put in place on airports in the initial days after that attack. Hand checking of all the luggage , cars being parked miles away from all airports , shuttles dropping the passengers to those parking lots etc, etc.

Re: 10 years ago today

I was in HS going to 4th period class and all of a sudden people started saying towers were hit. As i was so dumbfounded, went into the next class and on the tv screen they showed the lower manhattan in smoke. Everyone was very shocked.

Re: 10 years ago today

Junior year of high school, lunch period, an announcement came on over the loudspeaker of the principal asking if anybody had family who worked on wall street.. a few minutes later, announcement was made about the tower attacks. My brother lived/worked in the city (midtown) at the time (at the time, I didn't really know downtown/midtown/uptown and figured it was all closeby that well) and I called my mother to find out if she knewand if she'd heard from him...I forget after that...but I know they let us out early.

Re: 10 years ago today

Aww.

If i remember correctly, we did see the news but went to school but were asked to go back home within an hour or so :(.

Re: 10 years ago today

That night was the hardest night of my MIRC life ... Things weren't easy to control on channels

Re: 10 years ago today

Sophomore in an All White high school. I had moved to the US a month before and it was my first week in school. I was nervous already and then 9/11 took place. I don't remember if I found out anything in school but mom didn't let us go to school the next day fearing someone might taunt/try to hurt us. The School Principal called her personally and assured that the school was safe. Being the only Muslim/Middle-Eastern in school, I felt really singled-out though.

Re: 10 years ago today

If i remember correctly it was dark here in Pak...i was watching Geo and broke the news to my father and uncles and then everyone was in front of TV...shocked and quite...Next day there was no other topic but only this....

Re: 10 years ago today

I was at dad's office in Faisalabad ... it was 6 or 7pm when news broke ... and everyone was hooked to tv...

I remembered dad calling for hours to family members in New York, his older brother was stuck under the debris of wtc. .. Horrific night it was. On 27th Sept i had flight for NY, which turn out to be my worst flying experience ever.

Re: 10 years ago today

there wasn't any Geo Tv at that time..

Re: 10 years ago today

Re: 10 years ago today

fell asleep around 6:30 after pulling an all-nighter and woke up at 9:00 am... heard the news and was shaken at not only the devastation of the actual event, but also dazed by the thought that if I hadn't opted to pursue my Master's degree just the week before, I would have been on the 62nd floor of the South Tower working at Morgan Stanley. Felt a little selfish in that I was thinking about myself at that moment but couldn't help it. Went to class a little later... some didn't even know what had happened but soon enough everyone was gathered in the student lounge watching the telly in disbelief.
