I think in cases like these religion and culture are so intertwined. Yes the mullah didn’t cite anything Islamic to justify raping this poor girl but he is using his power as a mullah for wrongdoings. He knows young girls will come to him in the mosque and he abuses this authority. Young girls being sent to mosques for Islamic education by their parents - and this happens. It’s disgusting and sad that no one is thinking to punish him and that’s where you get the male dominated culture of many rural areas in South Asia coming into play. He hasn’t justified his actions using Islam but that doesn’t mean others haven’t tried. There have been many cases where “religious” authorities have misused religious texts to manipulate others into believing their heinous crimes weren’t all that bad. I’m again not singling out Islam because this is common in rural Indian villages as well where pandits have been accused of doing the same to young girls. It’s disgusting.

Given the culture and young girls and boys not mingling - most of these so-called “religious” men, use their power and the guise of religion to prey on these young girls and their unsuspecting families.

I think they made a horrible decision in sending the girl to her parents, and I also wish the women’s rights groups in Afghanistan were more well protected and also had an organization set up to help rescue such girls who are not safe in their own homes.

What about teachers? Should school system or modern education also be criticized?

Bus driver take school girl and rapes, should school bus system be criticized?

These events are all about authority/chance of having the prey alone.

**There are huge misconception about SE Asia and not having boys girls mingling as reasons OR so called male dominant society as factors leading to this crime.

On the other hand rape is much more common where intermingling is also common.

These crimes have nothing to do with …‘male dominant’ SE Asian society. Male dominant society itself a very vague term.
Places where women have ‘equal rights’, rape still occurs or abuse of women is still present unfortunately.

It is debatable what defines rape and reported method.

Lastly, punishment is being thought about and the man was caught by authorities. Yes, everywhere rapists do get away.
I mean anywhere these occur,… based upon many reasons.
