Gilgit has seen sunnies being killed as much as shias, I’ve been to gilgit twice myself, and taxi walas and hotel walas told me don’t go to that area (shia dominated) or you might not return. also once entering gilgit (few KM’s before gilgit on KKH) we were stopped by police, and forced to spend night in a local roadside hotel. reason they gave: you don’t look shia by face and just an hour ago 3 men from chillas (sunnis) were gunned down on the way to gilgit.

and gilgit is almost 50/50 in population of shia/sunni (talking about gilgit city, not the surrounding villages) because gilgit is probably the biggest army cantonment in GB area, and people from all over Pakistan live in gilgit city. If you have not personally went there, you will be surprised to see number of people from Sindh and Punjab living in gilgit (possibly because of army families).

There might have been a few killings of Sunnis (here and there) but not of the scale of Shias. There are groups of militants in the mountains, and the army does not do anything as they don’t disturb them. The images of dragging people out of buses, identifying and killing them are in front of every one. First time after killing of the foreign mountaineers the military has seriously tried to nab the perpetrators resulting in the killings of their own compatriots.
