Re: 10 Things not to say to someone from Pakistan
Being confused for Arab or any random ‘exotic’ ethnicity by Americans should not be taken as a compliment at all.
On Topic:
Bugger off.

He was quite astute then …![]()
Re: 10 Things not to say to someone from Pakistan
One thing I forgot to add here. Relation of that post to the topic.
My boss knew perfectly well that I am from Pakistan. And yet he brought up this Middle East stuff. I found it offensive because Americans tend to identify Pakistan as a middle eastern country, and Middle East in their eyes is a violent, backward place.
So Westerners, please keep Pakistan a South Asian country. Thanks.
Here is one more:
“Jinnah went to Muslim league because he was ignored by Congress, and he wanted a bigger role in politics for himself.”
One more:
“Curry.”
Re: 10 Things not to say to someone from Pakistan
Well, that is not exactly a wrong stereotype. Dancing really is not considered a decent thing to do in an average Pakistani family.
This!
And no our ‘curries’, kitchen and clothes don’t stink of asafoetida (hing).
Indians and Pakistanis are ‘same’. You wouldn’t say that for Turks and Greeks, so allow us the trolling and get yourself a good history book.
Okay I understand that some Pakistanis can pass off as Indians due to their physical features or whatever, but please don’t ever make the assumption that Pakistanis and Indians dress the same. The ladies will certainly don’t like that. The following statement may come across as tad hyperbolic to some, but there’s an earth and sky like difference between Pakistani and Indian fashion.
Women in Pakistan don’t wear Afghan shuttlecock burka. It’s not even a prominent trend in our Tribal areas that border Afghanistan.
And no we don’t have Sharia law in our country. Visit our big Cities and you might think that the local population of Pakistan is seemingly more ‘liberal’ than some of Pakistanis settled in liberal countries. So much for Sharia Law, the religious parties in Pakistan are yet to be elected as popular government.
Don’t diss our country’s founding fathers.
Don’t diss our fast bowlers.
Certainly don’t ever diss our mangoes.

Re: 10 Things not to say to someone from Pakistan
I didn’t know ‘Muslim’ was considered derogatory or needed a politically correct term, Salman.
Re: 10 Things not to say to someone from Pakistan
One day in restaurant, a white dude was explaing to his family.
“This is not indan food, this is Pakistani-indian food.”
I guess like French-canadian.
One Time I came back from cross country road trip, I was telling my colleagues that how prairies mile after mile reminded me of my own country. One guy give me this look and said “isn’t pakistan all mountain”
Re: 10 Things not to say to someone from Pakistan

Makes.me.mad!!! How dare they stereotype!!!
And err answer is Yes.

Oh dear, some people really must get out more and read a bit more, or perhaps alot more. Some of the things people have mentioned in this thread. ![]()
Things like this ^:hayaa::no:
Re: 10 Things not to say to someone from Pakistan
Not derogatory. But talking about religion generally makes one uneasy at workplace or at formal gatherings.
It is much easier to talk in terms of nationalities than religion, in such cases.
Re: 10 Things not to say to someone from Pakistan
People dont expect anyone from Pakistan to speak english at all so i think this is definitely a surprise for westerners even if we speak broken english.
Re: 10 Things not to say to someone from Pakistan
Funny, because I have always experienced the opposite. That they expect Pakistanis to speak good english.
Re: 10 Things not to say to someone from Pakistan
13) What brought you to the US?
And this one is difficult to answer. Usually I just throw some bull about the lure of opportunity. It is a valid question though.
The English question is a lot easier to answer. “I went to a bilingual school back home.” People can usually relate to that.
Hear, hear!
