1 Year On!

I cant believe time has flown bys fast. A year ago today were a landmark elections in Pakistan after a turbulent 2007. 2007 was quite bad for Pakistan ie the CJ issue, , May 12, Taliban taking over Swat and other areas, Lal Masjid, emergency, and the murder of BB.

I was planning to go Pakistan in January although postponed because of the potentially violent elections scheduled for february 18th. Luckily those elections passed much more peacefully than expected. The PML-Q league, MMA saw their fortunes drop. I was proud that the elections didnot become a bloody mess which some predicted it could be and overall they were quite fair - but I have a feeling the deal that would see the PPP, MQM, ANP in power was made long ago somewhere outside pakistan.

There was lots of media coverage and speculation over the new PM, the coalition government - if you were in Pakistan at the same time you wuld have found it tedious. The winning parties ie PPP, ANP, MQM, PML-N were jubilant. I was surprised that the PPP did not do anybetter in Punjab than it did. I was surprised that PML-N did that well and will probably win the next election. Not suprised that the MQM and ANP won where they won. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that the MQM, PPP, ANP have been allowed to manipulate the elections to an extent.

There was a big sigh of relief all around in Pakistan but dark clouds were always on the horizon as terrorists were at play and Zardari played an increasingly public role. I did not meet one person in Sndh who could say good about him. People suspected that he would either take the PM or Presidency. How right they were.

One year of democracy and have thing changed? Suicide bombing has decreased although Swat is lost for now.

What about prices, job, economy, important public services such as health? Any change?

U almost forgot to mentioned energy cuts

In the was the first year when all sources of energy has actually taken out of reach, may it be GAS, POWER, OIL and Wheat ( energy for man).

Long live the politician mafia of Pakistan.

Re: 1 Year On!

^^ Thanks for Reminding that hanibal.

The oil Price in the World market is 40$ per barrel, which if we convert into Pakistani Rs, become 16Rs per liter & including all taxes it become 27 per Liter & we are getting it on the Price of 58 Per ltr, NOW this is just a simple example of Robbing us by our own elected Democratic government.

Within the past 6 months, Pakistan has received $7.6 billion from IMF, and may seek a further $4.5 billion. All within a year of Unprecedented Economic Growth and Unprecedented amount of foreign reserves Pakistan had. :frowning:

Though I do not like current government but what was the inflation in 8 years before? Can we have numbers to compare or are we just going to say it and not present facts?

It may be a disappointment but I was there in Pakistan in 2007 December, petrol pumps all over Karachi were suffering load-shedding of Gas (yeah, low pressure), load-shedding of electricity, wheat and what not. So to blame the current govt and ignoring that same was observed in military government before would be injustice.

Dear Ehtasab,

You know that i didn't like the previous military regime, my point was, year a go, we voted and rejected that govt for its incompetency, but today, after the year, we still got that problem with no hopes of improvement.

I am not saying that the govt. should have solved the issue in a day, but in the years period, govt. could have given a road-map and hopes ( by getting right person for the job), but i guess all the focus is to put on a world record for having all time largest cabinet... and that is with persons like Raja Ashraf and co.

Re: 1 Year On!

I am never a pessimistic .but seeing that Talibans have scored a big victory ,just 160 k.m away from Islamabad,I tend to believe who will be in `Isloo' after one year.

Re: 1 Year On!

^^ You may not understand the real picture here...

Not only the people of Swat but every common man in Pakistan is looking forward to this kind of settlement, where the justice should be delivered in time... and on 10-20 years.

U can call it talibanization or what ever u want, but i call it a great act by the govt. to break the moral grounds of talibans + terrorists.

The act show that the Govt officials can go and talk to anyone to restore peace and harmony, if govt can deliver what it has promised, then yes this is one of its achievements.

The thing is many advocate to have a peace dialogue with rebel groups but when it comes to talibans, people just panic and run away. just like India is Whining about the peace deal, which is ofcourse understandable.

Re: 1 Year On!

^Because India is worried about Talibanization of Pakistan. It's a fact that Talibans have reached at the door step of India, since they are just 160 k.m away from islamabad.I do not think a vast majority of Pakistanis are in favour of rigorous islamic law and in support of Islamic terrorists but a a large cross section of Pak society actually does. The reason why India slams the deal is because,it fears a fudamentalistic Pakistan will soon disintegrate and will alter the balaance in the region, which may harm India in future.

Re: 1 Year On!

^^ so India can stop sponsoring them...

Anyway, India has greater things to worry about.. India should be checking its own backyard where Hindu-Taliban are getting power... Does BJP & RSS rings any bells.

Taliban of Afghanistan detroyed the Idols of Mahatama Budh, it was bad thing, but on the same note, Hindus under the govt and major political parties, demolished the Babri Mosque.. whats the difference ?

Taliban vows to convert every one to their idealogy... RSS and alikes vows to have ONLY hindus in the India.... so India should clear the mess in its own backyard.. Taliban of Pakistan can be disappear in matter of months if dealt rightly.. whereas BJP the RSS supported parties are on their way to New Delhi...

So Pakistan should be really worried about these Hindu Fanatics getting their hand on one of the largest war-machine in the world.

Re: 1 Year On!

India has never sponsored any kind of subversive activity in Pakistan and there is no proof atall for any Indian involvement in any of the Pak freedom/extremist movement whereas Pakistan is reponsible for almost all terror activities and is responsible for funding and abetting terror outfits in India. There are clearcut proofs for these and the entire world knows what had happened in 26/11.Your own government is busy now in admitting Pak mistake now :p

Pakistani Mulim fundementalists destroyed hundreds of Hindus temples across Pakistan in 1992.So whats your logic now?

In addition to these, what had happened in Bangladesh?Pak army butchered millions of Bangla citizens and it consisted of not only Hindus but muslims also and they destroyed numerous Hindu temples in bangladesh.

This statement can be sent to competition where they come up with JOKE of the year kind of stuff, only in this case, the statement should go for Joke of Century competition.

Just a correction:

A barrel equals 115.671 litres.
$40=1 bbl=115.671 litres
$1=115.671/40 litres
$1=2.891 litres
2.891 litres=$1=78PKR
1 litre=78/2.891=26.98 PKR

Pakistan oil production is less than 20% of its needs (72,000 bopd produced against 324,000 bopd required). That means oil imports are heavy. Again Pakistan does not buy oil daily and oil price is deduced based on some complex formula which takes into account current market price and the price of purchase and then some more.
