US firm to invest $1b in Munda Dam

ISLAMABAD: The Private Power and Infrastructure Board has approved proposals by American company AMZO Corporation of Maryland to build the Munda multipurpose dam project with more than $1 billion on a build, own, operate and transfer basis.

Water and power department sources said the board had approved the proposals and was ready to issue a letter of interest to the American company. The dam project, to be completed by 2011, entails a 703-feet high dam on the Swat River, with a water storage reservoir of 1.3 million acres feet and with a power generation capacity of 740 megawatts.

The water storage would improve the annual cropping intensity from 43 to 180 percent.

Another important benefit would be the flood mitigation by lowering the peaks in the river reach downstream of Munda. The reservoir behind the dam would also provide recreational facilities and promote surrounding fisheries.

The company will take up the development of the project as a raw site and prepare a detailed feasibility report leading to the design in a period of about 18 months. A company spokesman said the company had contracted Lahmeyer International GmbH of Germany in association with the National Development Consultants and M/s Review Consultants to undertake the feasibility studies. The joint venture may begin in May after the company gets the board’s letter of interest. —APP

I'm happy we're building more dams when people down south (yes there are pakistanis living below lahore) don't have enough clean water to drink.
