Zinedine Zidane announces retirement!!!

Re: Zinedine Zidane announces retirement!!!

BBC reporters in the stadiums said that some (not all) Italian fans were making money noises and other derogatory/racist remarks any time a black player from the French side got the ball.

There is no room at all for racism in football. They need to take action if players are being racist towards each other, and if it is the fans, they should be thrown out.

I know last year the Spanish coach made a nasty racial slur towards Theirry Henry and other instances where people have thrown banana peels at black players (since they see them as apes). There is just no room at all for this kind of stuff. It is unacceptable.

Re: Zinedine Zidane announces retirement!!!

Appalling! Im glad he got back at the guy, but only if it didn;t cost him the world cup :(

Zidane never insulted him, his race or his family. So, to say ‘he should’ve known better’ is a very bad excuse. None of us would have stand a racial and ugly taunt like that. He is just a human being, who reacted when his family and race was deliberately insulted.

I don’t think it was a big part of the game like media and people are making it out to be, I know trash talking goes on in the game and it will but, there is no way for anyone to say that ‘Zidane should’ve done this or that’ when they themselves would have done something similar or even worse.

Also, that ‘red card’ did not cost them the game. Penalty kicks are an ugly part of soccer IMO, I mean it hit the post, could’ve been anyone. Also, Italians have a history of penalty kicks, they themselves are not big fans…

I am not sad that Italians won, they played well, if not better. It was a breathtaking final with hustle and stamina shown by both teams. Congtraz to Italy and their captain.

Re: Zinedine Zidane announces retirement!!!

Zidane also had his nipple pinched by Materazzi and his jersey grabbed. If someone pinches your nipple and attacks your family, are you just going to walk away? He was provoked.

o.k. o.k., I am making excuses, lekin he is my favourite. :bummer:

:crying: I am so devastated. He is the bestest!

Italy’s Materazzi admits insulting Zidane

MILAN, Italy (AP) - Marco Materazzi admits he insulted Zinedine Zidane before the France captain head-butted him in the World Cup final. Materazzi denies calling him a “terrorist.”

“I did insult him, it’s true,” Materazzi said in Tuesday’s Gazzetta dello Sport. “But I categorically did not call him a terrorist. I’m not cultured and I don’t even know what an Islamic terrorist is.”

Zidane and Materazzi exchanged words after Italy broke up a French attack in extra-time of Sunday’s final in Berlin. Seconds later, Zidane lowered his head and rammed Materazzi in the chest, knocking him to the ground.
Zidane was sent off, reducing France to 10 men. Italy won the game in a penalty shootout.
“I held his shirt for a few seconds only, then he turned round and spoke to me, sneering,” the Italian defender said. “He looked me up and down, arrogantly and said: 'If you really want my shirt, I’ll give it to you afterwards.”’
The 32-year-old Inter Milan player did not elaborate exactly on what he said to Zidane.
“It was one of those insults you’re told tens of times and that always fly around the pitch,” he said.
Media reports, based on interpretations by lip-readers, have suggested that Materazzi called Zidane a terrorist or insulted his mother or sister. Materazzi denies these claims, too. “For me, the mother is sacred, you know that,” Materazzi told the newspaper

Materazzi is no stranger to controversy. He was suspended for two months for punching Siena defender Bruno Cirillo after a Serie A game in February 2004, and earned condemnation following a brutal tackle on Sweden and Juventus striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in October 2005.
Materazzi was also sent off three times while playing for Everton in the 1998-99 season.
One Italian senator even suggested that Materazzi - also sent off three times while playing for Everton in the 1998-99 season - didn’t merit selection for the Italian team because of his physical style.
Zidane also is known for having a temper. He was sent off for stomping on a Saudi Arabian opponent at the 1998 World Cup, while at Germany 2006 he was banned for France’s group match against Togo.
Five years ago with Juventus, Zidane head-butted an opponent in a Champions League match against Hamburger SV after being tackled from behind.
Meanwhile, Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni accused FIFA of double standards, noting that soccer’s governing body named Zidane as the tournament’s best player after his head-butt, while Italy forward Francesco Totti was kicked out of the 2004 European Championship for spitting in an opponent’s face.
“I notice a difference in the way in which Totti was treated after the spit and the way in which Zinedine Zidane has been lauded as a champion of soccer, even though he is held responsible for such a violent blow that it could even have had devastating effects,” Veltroni said.
FIFA announced Tuesday it will open a disciplinary investigation into Zidane’s conduct. FIFA also said that the ballot box for the tournament’s top player - voted by journalists - was open until after the final had ended, making it impossible to know how many ballots were cast before the match and during it.

Re: Zinedine Zidane announces retirement!!!

Zidane will reveal today why he did it. This has to be the biggest sporting news. Everyone is like why o why.

I will be little surprised if Zidane returns to play for another season at Real. He would want to end on a higher note than this (like a slap on Metarazzi's face in a CL semifinal against Inter? :D )

Re: Zinedine Zidane announces retirement!!!

Zidane has alwaysbeen my most favorite player and always will be..not matter what

Re: Zinedine Zidane announces retirement!!!

He did not regret the incident saying regretting means he accepted what Metarazzi said. But apologized to children and teachers. He was very honest and upfront. He is still the best :k: I will miss him :frowning:

Re: Zinedine Zidane announces retirement!!!

zidane said materazzii talked about his sister and mother not once, but three times.he said, he is a man and does not regret headbutting him.
I still think that he probably should've controlled his anger given what was at stake, but still he can not be blamed for what he did. Materazzi proved himself to be an a.hole and he should be banned by fifa.ItaIians gotta be the most racist people in europe.I read in a newspaper today comments by an Italian senator that french team has sacrificed its identity by including blacks, muslims and communists in the team.If an American senator or a British senator had made comments like that he would be asked to resign.

Re: Zinedine Zidane announces retirement!!!

FIFA better not take away his player of the tournament award. :disgust:

Zidane, Zidane, Zidane :hula:

Re: Zinedine Zidane announces retirement!!!

His headbutting was a disgrace but his play wasn't, let him kept the award.
