Re: Your views on religion at home...
I am sorry Reha, but that is not true (at least not most of the time). I know many people that dont have religion at home, and they are all good people. I think this whole thing about teenage pregnancy, STDs etc... come from low education levels and depends on social econimic background, not so much religion. As MIrch say, wile they may not have religions, they do have morals. Ill give you an example. I joined a counslling center twoyears to become a counselor to hep people with subjects like immigration, discrmination, suicide... Surprinsingly, most people taht volunteered there called themselves Atheist..they dont believe in God at all. And you know what? they are the sweetest, wisest most open minded people I have ever met and really opened my eyes to so much. At the time that I joined the center, there was a whole debate going on in Quebec about ethnic religious issues. The main thing was about women and the Hijab. Politicians (mostly practicing Christians by the way) asked for the hijab to be banned. Teachers could not wear it, students would be expected to take it off...Anyhow, the council that arranged these debates had a few in Montreal. People were invited to go protest at the events because they were deemed racist and such. So who protested, stood outside holding sign , spoke to the radio and asked for the rights of minorites to be protected? Many of these people, people who do not believe in God or dont live religiously, but were there because they belieev no one should be judged, especially when those judging are ignorant about the practices. Oh, and where where the our people (the hijabis, their husbands, relatives, friends)...Nowhere to be found. So dont assume so quickly.
Im not saying they're bad people Nina...one of my nicest professors was an atheist. I dont have an issue with them at all.
I believe everyone is born with insaniyat, no need for religion to teach it to them. My siblings and I were all born and raised in Western culture without religion, yet all of us have what you call "insaniyat" and really good character and moral values. We are not evil without religion.
The morals, character molding and values you all follow are ALL based on a religion. The things we consider bad, evil, wrong, immoral, etc...are all condemned by religion (not necessarily only Islam).
Re: Your views on religion at home...
Religion gives us something to look forward to after this life. Do good and you will be rewarded, do bad and go to hell. I think in most of the religions, there is life after this worlds life.
For a non-religious person, this is the only life, I think right ?? So what motivates them to do good ? I am not making a statement but actually asking from Unos, sharabee.
A non-religious person believes this is the only life they have. Personally I do hope that there is an afterlife, but I do not know and neither does anyone else whether there is. This is most likely the only life I have, and I want to make the best of it rather than wasting it away. What motivates us non-religious people to do good? Well, we don't give to charity or help others for getting some sort of reward from God or going to heaven, but we do it because we are human and we love other people and this is the right thing to do. Simple as that.
I believe there is no need to follow any religion or be religious as most people just follow the religion of their parents or of their culture and there is no true religion yet all claim to be true. It's better to not follow any religion and live a good life.
If a God is merciful, and there is indeed an afterlife, then all good people regardless of whether or not they were religious will go to heaven.
The fact that religion makes people think that there is an afterlife is dangerous because it makes people want to live this life thinking it's temporary and live it in the way that their religion tells them to rather than thinking for themselves .

one thing that disturbs me is that how non-religious people find comfort when they lose a love one. When my father passed away, I used to pray for his maghfirat (still do) and that makes me feel connected to him. I know that similar conceprts of parying for your love ones who are gone sxist in every religion. What would I think where is he if I am not a religious person. Just a thought that a human can be treated like an object and he/she is vanished forever once he/she is dead (no soul, no afterlife, no hope of meeting on the day of judgment) would drive me insane. I would feel so empty and shallow if I was an atheist.

So it offers you delusion and that's why you're in it?
I am not religious and dont beleive in after life. What motivates me to not kill my neighbour? Common sense and humanity.
I don't need to be SCARED into being a good person.

Again.. religion offers delusion ..in this case it makes people happy and satisfied that the deceased is somewhere else and happy...
Re: Your views on religion at home...
For the argument sake, lets say that yes, it offers delusion. What is wrong with that delusion? You feel connected when you hang pictures of your family in your office. Is that also not a delusion? Should that be banned too?
Humans need to feel connected. That is important for our existence and psychological health. Religion helps us to feel connected to ourselves, to others, to the ones that are gone and to the one supreme being.
Re: Your views on religion at home...
I don't understand what an athiest does when they are in a really bad place or a down and out situation, where everything feels hopeless and the future looks bleak. Or when they are in mortal danger. How do they find comfort with no God to pray to?

So do you not stop at red light when no one is coming from other side?

Exercising and listening to music or watching a video.

All of us stop at red lights, that has nothing to do with what he said.
He said he doesn't need to be SCARED into being a good person. Which means he doesn't do whatever good he does due to fear from a God or due to expecting some kind of reward out of it, but does it because it's the right thing to do.

Great! You answered it. Fine.
Let's see.
You said "All of us stop at red lights, that has nothing to do with what he said."
OK. My question remains, why do we stop?
Is this because we want to be good people or have fear that from somewhere unknown a cop would come and catch us.
Come on. I asked a totally related question.
What happenes in religion is the same analogy. People who have fear of God do better deeds than those who do not. Moreover in religion there is a promise for reward. (Not present in stopping at the red light).
Anyone knows that the laws of the land are folllowed not just beacuse one wants to be a good person, it is mainly because of fear of getting punished and that by the way is the most potent deterrant. :)
P.S. I hope you have got the understanding of connection between my question and why someone is 'assured' to be a good person.

Oops, I misunderstood your question! Thanks for elaborating on what you mean, but I disagree with your analogy. We don't stop on red light because of fear of cops, we stop because it's the right thing to do.
Religious people do not perform better deeds than non-religious people who don't fear God. I know many non-religious people that have done lots of good deeds. Religion or no religion, people do good deeds regardless.

Right thing to do why? Please elaborate your understanding here what consitutes right thing to do? Just to remind you, I said in my question there was NO one coming from other side.
Religious people do not perform better deeds than non-religious people who don't fear God.
1- Please define religious people. (Maybe off topic/irrelevant, so this is optional question for you)
2- The seemingly religious people have no fear of God my friend.
I know many non-religious people that have done lots of good deeds. Religion or no religion, people do good deeds regardless.
*Sure, but that does not mean religion is to be blamed for it. *
I said above, in earlier post, given the same situation to irreligious person and true religious person, a religious person will win in being a much better person just because when no one is seeing, that person will still do the right thing.
In my red stop light example, chances are that a person may still break the light if he is sure there is no cop there. But the person who does not know, has fear of being caught, will not break the light. Got it sir?

Re: Your views on religion at home...
Please remeber: This concept of morality is all good but it goes only so far. Where morality ends, religion picks what is left over.
Re: Your views on religion at home...
The way my parents has raised me and my sister were raised with religious values. We were taught Namaz, Quran and values that the religion brings to the society. I will insha'allah to best of my ability to raise my kids with religious and society values.
Re: Your views on religion at home...

you mind elaborating on this? what topic does general morality fail to cover that religion does? delusion about afterlife and heaven?

Good question.
First, I am not trying to promote Islam here, just talking about general concept of three or four major religions.
Now, I said where morality ends. That means where all the available means to deter a person from doing crime fail, the concept of afterlife and fear of being punished in afterlife makes sure the person does choose right act.
If someone has strong fear of being caught in the world from commiting a crime , the person would think twice before carrying out the crime.
But if on top of that the person has fear of being punished hereafter (even if no fear of being caught in this world), the person will think hundred times befor commiting the crime. Hence more chances for the person to stay away from crime. :)

So religion goes one step ahead of general morality by scaring people away from committing horrendous acts... just want to establish this.

Glad you seem to be agreeing with the concept.
Nothing wrong with that.
What is the ultimate goal?
Promote anti-relgious ideas and let people commit horrendous crimes....... or.... give them concept of religion and make them better person? :)
