I dont see a logical issue with yoga. Yes prayers provide the benefits of meditation, but yoga is something different, whether or not people of another religion use it, its benefits can not be negated.
There are tons of muslims who practice stuff that was in their culture before they became muslim, case in point silat, the indonesian martial art, or tantui among the chinese.
here is a page with some info on muslims role in development of martial arts. These were essentially non-islamic techniques that muslims adopted, and developed. why should yoga be any diff.
thanks for your input guppies, but what i want to know is that doesn't it depends on your niyyat ? i mean taking yoga as a kind of exercise and not something religious?
Why? You will probably read a hundred books on how to do yoga, learn to do namaaz, and it will be better than yoga…I don’t know the name but this lady doctor from Pakistan wrote a book called, “The physiological and psychological effect os salat”…
Yoga apparently means or is derived from someword that means "Yoke".
It is to "yoke" the mind on a correct path. Hatha yoga, ie. the excersise and stuff is to prepare the body to continue with yoking the mind. There are different types of Yoga, which use different psychological techniques. So yoga is viewed by most hindus as part and parcel of religious practice. It is not simply excercise like pilates or static tension. Apparently it is clearly beneficial in reducing tension and blood pressure. That much is now generally accepted. So is it right to accept the benefits while accepting what are clearly religious practices of kufr?
