Re: Would you vote for a Hindu or Sikh candidate in an election in a western country?
i dont know what about bobby jindal is indian or pro-india. just another bible-thumping backwardly idiot from the south, set to drag the world back another 20-30 yrs if given any prominence.
Re: Would you vote for a Hindu or Sikh candidate in an election in a western country?
I'd vote for the person who's party's ideals align with mine. I don't believe that their religion should come into it.
On a related note (because it has to do with elections), I remember a time when my university's student Islamic society decided to field a candidate in the student body elections. After prayers they rounded up a gang of about 30 students to go to where the sign-up sheet was, as the rules were that everyone running had to have at least 25 other students to sign off their application.
So we got there, the Islamic society's candidate filled in a form, and the 30 of us signed it.
At that point, the Islamic society's president noticed that another desi guy had come along, filled out an application and stuck it up on the board where it awaited signatures from other students. This desi guy had a Hindu name.
The Islamic society president asked him, "Oh hi, where are you originally from?"
The Hindu looked at this big gang of 30 very Muslim-looking guys, looked a little bit intimidated but then proudly piped up, "India".
The Islamic society president said back, "Oh cool, I'm from Pakistan, that means we're practically neighbours. Guys, everyone sign off on his form". The Hindu candidate immediately got more than the required number of signatures and could submit his application immediately.
The reason the Islamic society president gave was that desis of whatever religion generally have similar cultural values and so it is easier to work with a desi than with a gora.

If desis of whatever religion were really so culturally similar then there was no need for Pakistan.
That is why i am strongly against any kind of "south asian" unity between muslims and hindus because it negates the two-nation theory.

Dear “patriotic Pakistani!”…
The essence of your position is shown in these two posts and later you just opened the bag by talking about the ‘two nation theory’.
You wanted to see first, how many come forward to show support based on views rather than origin of the candidate, and then posted, these to refute all who showed indifference to the origin of the candidate.
Innit?
By the way, the apprehension among Pakistani voters must have been multifactorial, not just Indian origin of Bobby Jindal.
His so called ‘speech’ was hilariously ridiculous, ridiculously hilarious… and more likely both!

I remember that in college and university, they had South Asian clubs, but no separate Indian and Pakistani ones. The thing is that many people who were members were international students. Seeing that, I'd assume that even non-westernized desis share that view as well.
