With the 1/4 fractions i was referring to ancestry and lineage. With the 1/3 example including step parents i was referring more to culture. Another example of 1/3 African Chinese, 1/3 Pakistani and 1/3 Indian which would be very rare and also cultural would be a situation where an African Chinese male had a Pakistani and Indian wife and then the child was born of 2 parents but required the second wife to be a surrogate. Now if both wives were Punjabi and one was from Lahore and the other from Amritsar, a difference of 40 km, how much cultural difference and difference in ancestry would they really have? Technically there would only be 2 lineages involved but practically the influence could come from all 3.
I agree with your family friend example and would say she is definitely 100% Nepali.
