Re: BREAKING NEWS .... WOOLMER MAY HAVE BEEN MURDERED... GEO..

*This is bizzare. If he was indeed strangulated then this should have been determined by now. They do not have to wait for toxicology reports to determine if death was by strangulation. *

As they had earlier said that autopsy is incolclusive and they have to wait for toxicology (evidence of poison), it means that there was no evidence of strangulation.

Re: BREAKING NEWS .... WOOLMER MAY HAVE BEEN MURDERED... GEO..

A high court judge yesterday rejected an attempt by the family of the disgraced former South African cricket captain, Hansie Cronje, to have the long delayed inquest into his death in an air crash held in secret.

Mr Justice Siraj Desai ordered that television cameras and the print media be allowed into the Cape Town court - despite claims by the state counsel, Willem Tarentaal, that they would handle the hearing "insensitively".

Mr Tarentaal told the court that the families of the three men killed in the crash had been subjected to media exposure. "To subject the families of the deceased to still further coverage in this regard is not in the interests of justice," he said.

Police said neither the families of the other dead men nor Cronje's widow, Bertha, were expected to attend the inquest. They said they had been unable to trace the family of the dead co-pilot, Ian Noakes, 49, who was believed to have relatives in the UK.

Cronje died four years ago when the light plane in which he was travelling slammed into the Outeniqua mountains near the town of George, in the Eastern Cape. The pilot, Willie Meyer, 69, also died in the crash. He was an experienced pilot, with more than 20,000 hours flying time to his name.

Cronje made his Test debut against the West Indies in 1992 and went on to play 68 Tests for South Africa including a record 53 as captain.

He also played first-class cricket for Free State and Leicestershire.

Initially he was revered as one of the most successful captains in the history of the South African cricket team, but he died in disgrace after a match-fixing scandal. He was banned from the game for life after it was found that he had accepted about $130,000 (£68,000) to throw matches.

The son of a preacher, Cronje claimed to have been "born again" after killing a child in a road accident in 1991.

He said of the match-fixing scandal: "In a moment of stupidity and weakness I allowed Satan and the world to dictate terms to me. The moment I took my eyes off Jesus my whole world turned dark."

Rumours that he had been murdered have been circulating in South Africa, but no evidence has been produced.

Evidence at yesterday's hearing suggested the crash was as a result of a "chain of errors" familiar to air crash investigators. In this case they included pilot error, faulty equipment on the aircraft - a Hawker Siddeley 748 - and at the airport, as well as poor visibility.

A pilot is heard swearing on the voice cockpit recorder, followed by a ground-proximity alarm saying: "Pull up, pull up," and then silence.

"They didn't see the mountain at all," said an investigator for the Central Aviation Authority, Andre de Kock.

Asked by Mr Justice Desai why the pilot did not react faster, Mr De Kock said it was a "mental thing. It's like you don't believe it and don't react".

He said the crash could have been avoided if the pilot had used a standard "missed approach procedure" after over-flying the runway. This required him to go to a designated eight-mile beacon before trying again to land.

**The runway's ground landing system at George airport was not working correctly and the "directional gyroscope" on the plane was defective, he said.

Two wires on the compass were also disconnected, a fault that could have resulted in the pilots receiving confusing direction readings.

"What was unknown to them was that they were drifting by a large amount. They had lost situational awareness," he said.
**

The aircraft was travelling at 150 miles per hour when it hit the mountain. Its fuselage was split into three by the impact.

The hearing continues.

Match fix Mafia killed Bob

Match fix Mafia killed Bob

Bob Woolmer was murdered by a shadowy group known as the “Match-fixing Mafia”, it was claimed last night.

Former Pakistan bowler Sarfraz Nawaz said a group of international criminals were behind Pakistan coach Woolmer’s death.

Nawaz, 58, said yesterday: “I’ve been saying this for the last four days — that his death is not natural, but it’s murder.

“Woolmer’s death is connected to the Match-fixing Mafia.

“The theory going around in West Indies police circles is that Woolmer may have been killed by those who wanted to silence him on the issue of match-fixing.”

And top cricket official Dr Ali Bacher said: “You can’t rule out foul play. It’s common knowledge when teams from the sub-continent play, millions of dollars change hands.”

But ex-Pakistan legend Imran Khan said: “I believe he died of natural causes. What could be the motive for killing Bob Woolmer? Until I have concrete proof, I wouldn’t believe even for a one minute that there could be any motive for killing him.”

Police in Jamaica, where Woolmer’s body was found on Sunday, said they were treating his death as “suspicious”.

Woolmer died less than 24 hours after his team crashed out of the World Cup when they lost to 10-1 outsiders Ireland, a result that sparked outrage in Pakistan.

Woolmer, who was South Africa’s coach when disgraced captain Hansie Cronje admitted match-fixing, was writing his autobiography.

But ghost writer Ivo Tennant said yesterday there was “nothing incriminating” in the manuscript. He added: “We were just in the early stages, but he never mentioned match-fixing.

“As far as I know we had no plans to include anything on the subject in the book and I’m convinced he knew nothing about Cronje’s activities even though he was coach at the time.”

Yesterday Pakistan played their last World Cup match against Zimbabwe. They wore black armbands and captain Inzamam-ul-Haq wept as he left the field after batting.

The squad and officials were asked to stay in Kingston for two days while police investigate Woolmer’s death.

Police sources confirmed yesterday that no traces of poison were found in Woolmer’s room at the swish Jamaica Pegasus resort hotel.

But reports of scratches on his face and blood and vomit traces found in the room were unexplained. Cops refused to confirm local radio reports that Woolmer had been strangled.

Jamaica’s deputy police commissioner Mark Shields said medical reports gave police “sufficient information to continue a full investigation” into Woolmer’s death. A full range of toxicology tests for sophisticated poisons on blood and tissue samples taken from the body were ordered yesterday.

Pathologists who did the post mortem confided they were “totally baffled” by his death.

A source close to the probe in Kingston said: “We still have no idea what — or who — killed Bob Woolmer. The autopsy drew a blank, leaving the police with no option but to order a full investigation.

“He was diabetic and had not been in perfect health but there appears to be no reason why he should have died so suddenly in his hotel room. The possibility of poisoning is being given serious attention.”

The revelation of Cronje’s match-fixing for an Asian betting syndicate was cricket’s biggest scandal for decades.

In April 2000 he admitted receiving cash and gifts from a bookie. He got team-mates Herschelle Gibbs and Henry Williams to help fix a one-day international at Nagpur, India.

Cronje was caught after Delhi police chief KK Paul taped phone conversations between him and dodgy London-based bookie Sanjay Chawla.

Woolmer met Mr Paul in preparation for the book during a tour of India, according to reports in the sub-continent. Mr Paul revealed: “He had come to me to discuss the various details of the match-fixing case, and he was given those.”

Cronje was killed just two years later in a plane crash.

Woolmer, who had been tipped to be the next England coach, was embroiled in controversy while with South Africa in 1997. A ball used in a match against India showed evidence it had been tampered with. He fiercely denied the claims.

Bob’s wife doesn’t rule out murder

London: Gill Woolmer, wife of Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer added a new twist in the circumstances surrounding Bob Woolmer’s death. And even though the final autopsy report is still awaited but she refuses to rule out the possibility that her husband had been murdered.
“I suppose there is always the possibility, I mean some of the cricket fraternity fans are extremely volatile and passionate about the game and about what happens in the game. So I suppose there is always the possibility that it could be that (murder),” she said in an interview with Sky Sports.

In fact, a Jamaican Daily called The Gleaner came up with another report - claiming that a highly placed police source told them that a bone in Woolmer’s neck was found broken - suggesting strangulation.
Gill further claimed, “It fills me with horror. I just can’t believe that people would behave like that or that anyone would want to harm someone who has done such a great service to international cricket.”
She also said that he was “depressed” at Pakistan’s defeat but ruled out suicide, adding that he was fit and had been trying to lose weight because of diabetes.

“He was very depressed and he sent me an email to that effect, but he always got depressed and down when the boys didn’t do as he expected and hoped,” she said. “But that was normal in any competition, he was a very competitive person. But there’s no way that suicide was involved, he would never ever.”

She said that she was waiting for the results of a second pathologist’s report before her husband’s body could be flown home to South Africa.

“They have given me some indication of why they think it’s suspicious but I’m not prepared to say what,” she added.

Conspiracy theories have abounded since Woolmer’s death, with claims in some media that he had been murdered by a match-fixing syndicate.
Jamaican police said on Tuesday that the 58-year-old’s death was being treated as “suspicious”.

Former England batsman Woolmer was found unconscious in his Kingston hotel room less than 24 hours after Pakistan’s shock World Cup defeat by Ireland which knocked them out of the tournament. He was pronounced dead in hospital later that day.
