Inzamam rejects idea of separate Test, ODI teams
By Mohammad Yaqoob
LAHORE, Feb 23: Pakistan captain Inzamamul Haq has rejected the idea of separate Test and one-day teams with different skippers. He was speaking in a Meet-the-Press programme organized by the Sports Journalists Association of Lahore (SJAL) on Thursday.
“We do not have an adequate pool of players to form two separate teams,” Inzamam said.
He said he was fit to play cricket till the next World Cup. “Yes, I have been facing back problems but now I am quite fit,”.
Inzamam had a back problem which forced him to play important matches only.
Asked if his decision of not playing in the second Twenty20 tournament indicated his fitness problem, he said, “Since I have to play in international matches, I will not be available for Twenty20 cricket.”
He declined that there was any grouping among the players which led to team’s defeat in the home ODI series against India.
“There is no grouping and the team is united. Such kinds of news are always surfaced when the team suffers defeat. We have lost the ODI series but won the Test series. No body is talking about that,” he said.
Inzamam said he had no pressure of criticism but public pressure was always there which helped players to boost their performance.
The skipper pointed out that injuries to Shoaib Akhtar and Shahid Afridi had made a difference in the ODI series.
Talking about the second ODI in Rawalpindi, he said the turning point in the match were four Pakistani run outs. “That raised the morale of the Indians and they bounced back after losing the first game in Peshawar,” Inzamam said.
About the coming tour of Sri Lanka, he said Pakistan was capable of winning it.
Asked if the Sri Lankans had become stronger after touring Australia, Inzamam said it was not like that and it depended on a team how it played on the match day.
He said the Indian wicket-keeper Mahendra Dhoni was the main force in snatching victory from Pakistan in Lahore and Karachi.
The skipper said fielding was a main difference between the two countries and Pakistan at the moment needed a fielding coach.
About bowling coach, Inzamam said that Wasim Akram or Waqar Younis were the best choice.
He said the coaches should be appointed on long-term basis as the coach required time to improve players’ performance.
Asked about fate of highly paid coach Bob Woolmer in presence of bowling and fielding coaches, Inzamam said the work load had been increasing and more staff would help to do quality work.
He advised the PCB to have vigilant eyes over under-19 players who won the World Cup in Sri Lanka.
“The board should help them in getting jobs in various departments and give them maximum chances to play first-class cricket,” he said.

Well, here is my concern:
- “About bowling coach, Inzamam said that Wasim Akram or Waqar Younis were the best choice.”
Were…? As in, they don’t stand as qualified candidates anymore? What has been Mushtaq Ahmed doing all this time in the team?
Also note:
- “Asked about fate of highly paid coach Bob Woolmer in presence of bowling and fielding coaches, Inzamam said the work load had been increasing and more staff would help to do quality work.”
