Denial:
In response to a reporter’s question, Secretary Gates said, “…I don’t follow every contractor the Department of Defense has around the world. I can tell you subsequent to the question I got last night, the Department of Defense does not use Blackwater in Pakistan.”
Now we may not believe what he says, but there is no “proof” anymore. The story was started because of his interview alone, and then he himself denied it.
