Re: Why the term "DESI"
Nothing wrong with calling pakistanis/ indians desi...
dude you're on crack man find a better topic to talk about. Why does a baby's ass itch?
Re: Why the term "DESI"
This term Desi as I have understood and heard used encompasses anyone from the sub-continent region, india, pakistan, sri lanka, bangladesh and perhaps nepal. But in general this is used to refer to people from Pakistan and India.
IMO, its better than the term Asians, as used in UK to refer to people from Pak and India because there are other countries as well whose people are also asians, like Japan, Korea, Vietnam tc. In the US, the term Asian is usually used to refer to these people. I know a japanese who got offended when referred to as Oriental.
Re: Why the term "DESI"
LOL, the term Desi is an insult? Maybe if you have some sort of inferiority complex than yeah but other wise, I've never found the term derogotary in any way. Probably people from villages find it offending, since they grew up being teased by city slickers with "hah...uss ullo desi ko dekho...ussay to parnhna bhee naheen ata!" and stuff of that sort. I don't think "Paki" is a good alternative as it contains some racist undertones. Otherwise I woud not have mind that term.
Re: Why the term "DESI"
I got to know the modern use of "desi" from GS.......though was aware "paindoo" people are called desi. I've never used "DESI" before GS. I still avoid to use it in my posts as cant use off GS. Westerns in UK dont use "desi". I only use asians or pakistani/indian etc.
Re: Why the term "DESI"
hmm......i don use the term desi...........i use paki....n i don mean any harm..............
Re: Why the term "DESI"
In the UK iv never heard desi...Seems like a North American thing...here we use Paki but that to anyone thats Paki...they dont need to be from Paki...In London anyway people from the subcontinent are freshys...
Re: Why the term “DESI”
my cousin told me the fob/refs in england are known as mangaitars ![]()
paki pride i learned brown once i moved to canada. over south of the border everyone is known as desi…their brown skinned…they are desi. i used to HATE the word brown. but i guess now i’m used to hearing it…so i just switch between the two.

mocking someone because of who their fixed attributes are - like race or ethnicity, is a shameful thing to do, across the spectrum of all races.
calling degrading terms, even a term like desi does not suit us as respectful and respectable muslims.
in language, ideally, if the term desi is used as a simple word that connotes, simplicity of character (seedha pun) or of being from own home land…then it is alright.
but, if it is said specifically to mock someone, who maybe have a punjabi or pashto accent or wears a particluar type of traditional clothing and we forget to see them as people who have the right to express themselves as who they are, then it is bad on the part of those who call people desi, for the sake of calling them that.
Re: Why the term "DESI"
I think you're confusing "desi" with "paki." That's a derogatory term because it was coined by white people for that purpose. Like calling a black person the 'n" word (originally Negro) or calling a Chinese person a "chink" or a Japanese person a "jap" or a Mexican a "spic."
Isnt Paki like Aussie?
Re: Why the term "DESI"
^In England, it's more like n*****

Re: Why the term "DESI"
Actually the term desi stems from Americans and not British....
For Brits, you are reffered to as 'Asians'
Re: Why the term "DESI"
Okay so why do Pakistanis proudly promote their fresh 'desi ghee' and fresh 'desi lassee', wth
Re: Why the term "DESI"
depends if u ran into culturally pluralistic, educated & genuinely decent courteous people or prejudgmental ones.
Re: Why the term "DESI"
Not possible
Re: Why the term "DESI"
In USA pakistani and indian community use this word and not the others. so it is like if some one says he is a desi means he is from our homeland.
On a side note when you call someone paindu to mock them and as a disrespect, it is actually very disrespectful to all the people who live in DEEHAT or PIND .So i hope next time you all will be a little more careful in chosing your words and calling anyone paindu to make fun of that person.
Re: Why the term "DESI"
same applies with the chosen terminology being 'ABCD' and 'BBCD'

Re: Why the term “DESI”
