*Irving's imprisonment in Austria is not only an insult to free speech, it may give an impression that someone has something to hide, thus encouraging further Holocaust conspiracy theories. *
Holocaust a tool to silence critics of Israel: Finkelstein
A Jewish professor believes that the Jewish elites in the United States use the holocaust as a weapon to silence those who criticize Israel’s atrocities against Palestinians, ‘Tehran Times’ reported Monday. The paper quoted Norman Finkelstein, a professor of Political Science from Princeton University, as saying, "What is now called anti-Semitism is actually legitimate criticism of Israeli policy toward the Palestinians. “The charge of anti-Semitism is simply used, like the Nazi holocaust, to silence criticism of Israel,” added the professor. He made the remarks in an interview with the Iranian Mehr News Agency on January 2, during which Finkelstein described his views on the holocaust, said the daily.
The author of several books further said that the US Jewish elites use the Nazi holocaust particularly "to bludgeon critics of Israel into silence and to extract what was called ‘Holocaust compensation’ from Europe. “I am against Jewish organizations pretending to speak in the name of holocaust survivors and then keeping the money for themselves, the survivors never seeing a dime of it,” said Finkelstein denouncing extortion of holocaust compensation on false pretexts. The paper further reported that Finkelstein supported armed resistance of the Lebanese Hizbullah against the Israeli Army and said "the Zionists indeed learnt well from the Nazis. “The Zionists’ repugnant treatment of the Palestinians, and their attempts to destroy Palestinian society within Israel and the occupied territories, reveals them as basically Nazis,” the paper further quoted the author.
***He had a point; after all, a number of European countries would not allow a deeply anti-Semitic book to be published, and have made it a criminal offence to deny the Holocaust.
Why should it not also be illegal to insult the Prophet? ***

No, laws reflect the mores, history, and values of a people. So a large group of people in many countries passed laws that prohibited Holocaust denial a veiled form of hate. To me that says that the genocide of the Jews started as anti-semitism and grew to horrific proportions. The people of Europe are now ashamed of that behavior and will no longer allow it
.
okay so criticising a genocide is a crime
yet there is outright denial of Armenian, ukranian, native american and chinease genocide by the perpetuators I dont see that labelled as a crime or spreading hatred

But, if you do not see the logic of banning hate, then you are most likey either hoplessly celf-centered, or filled with hate. Perhaps both. How suprising

you should say criticism of jews should be a crime
Genocides or Holocausts have been committed against many groups throughout history, yet we don’t see any of them demanding laws to stop people questioning them. Why should Jews be allowed to treat theirs as some sort of religion?

Cartoons mocking relisious figures occur all the time, why is it only Muslims that want special treatment? Why is that Muslims migrate to a country and want to make the people subjugate themselves to your religious norms?
If making the first statement about the Holocaust in WW2 makes you ‘anti-semitic’, I wonder what the almost similar statement about the Native Indian genocide in America makes you?

This is a fairly modern phenomena last 20-30yrs

asking someone to respect your religious leaders is subjugation?
bloody hell, historically islam has been the most tolerant religion
even in theory Islam respects all the Judeo-christian Prophets yet they cannot respect one Prophet we have that they do not believe in.
Who do you think is more intolerant?
Most American’s I have spoken to don’t even know about USS liberty. Another success of Jewish lobbies to keep the fact of Israeli terrorism against American’s from becoming widespread knowledge.
If mocking religious figures is your defination of freedom then we should not go any farther

There is a big difference between theory and practice.
I wonder what the Qadianis think about Islamic tolerance

off-topic
sure the Qadianis are opperessed in pakistan in many ways
but then again it has been so only in the last 20 odd yrs
You cannot draw conclusions abouts a groups of people and a religion as diverse as Islam and muslims by looking at one era only
Here I found a priceless jewish contribution to literature and ''free speech"
