It's pretty simple why there is no sports culture:
1: The poor in India/Pakistan/Bangladesh earn barely enough to eat. Small kids end of working jobs as soon as they they reach 8-10 years of age. Diet is barely enough to survive.
2: Middle Class: These kids are forced to spend 8-15 hours a day studying. Even if they want to play sports, there parents force them to spend more time studying.
3: Rich: the rich kids to are forced to study and even if they want to play sports, there are no sports facilities in schools.
That being said, most of the indian medal winners come from dirt poor families and only got into sports because they were heavily supported by their parents.
Sushil Kumar, the Jat wrester from Haryana, is the son of a bus conductor. The only reason he got into wrestling was because he comes from a family of wrestlers.
Abhinav won Gold for India last time, I would still rate this year’s performance better. 6 Medals is not at all bad considering the popularity and support for Olympics sports in India. I’m sure we will do better next time. Many corporates are now showing interest in Olympic sports.Believe me, things are going in the right direction in India.
That is what I said in one of my earlier posts that money needs to be pumped into sports other than cricket in India and maybe part of IPL loot should be shared by other sports in order to make head way in them.
Yeah, this year's haul of 6 medals isn't bad considering India won just one bronze in the 1996 olympics. And the (individual) medal prior to that was in 1952! What's more heartening is that 2 of those 6 medals were won by women.
Obviously there's a long way to go, but winning at events like these brings more attention to other sports (non cricket).
As a side note, 5 of the 6 medals came from boxing, wrestling, and shooting. So i guess there goes Gandhiji's non violent nation :D
