Why does military dictatorship keep returning?

What is it in Pakistan that makes it inevitable? There are poorer countries, more diverse countries, more fundamentalist countries - yet they don’t suffer this cyclical phenom.

it's strategic location.. due to which military expenditure has been high and sadly the military is the only institution left with any order and structure to run the country.. the rest of the institutions have been dismantled and deprived due to lack of funding and neglect.

It is difficult to break the cycle when force and wealth both are cornered by one agency. Still, don't the military commanders want Pakistan to flourish as a people's country? Why do they put their personal gains above country's?

define flourish.

I think the reason the military has to come to power to rescue the civilian adminstration every decade is because of the fact that the civilian leaders were not able to run the Land of Pure effectively. Why did we have this bad governace? Some people are going to blame the internal agencies outright for this mishap, but I think, that its the civilian leaders own faults which gave an excuse to these men in Khakis to takeover the leadership. Look at our history, the decade of 1990's was a lost decade, who was running the country at that time Benazir, and Sharif, both suppose to be well educated people, democratically elected, and what did they do, once they were in power? They robbed and raped us. That's why, if you speak to a well educated Pakistani, even living in Western democracies, they would not support the idea of civilian democracy in Pakistan at the moment, may be in future. It's not that we dont like democracy or anything, it's that we are not going to support the sham democracy. Musharraf, though not elected leader of Pakistan, is atleast trying to run the country effectively. The economy is going up, although the people are not yet able to see the effects of it on their daily life, but thst's a matter of time, the foreign policy is also somewhat offensive(or kinda okay).

Our much trumpeted 1973 Constitution is the biggest hurdle facing Pakistan. Pakistan was created in the name of Islam, yet we have been foisted with western system of government. The House of Lords and the House of Commons. The Education system , the economic system, the judicial system is western colonial. That is why we are not able to cater for the common man. Till we get rid of this western "BUG" we will continue to face the same problem.

Re: Why does military dictatorship keep returning?

who cares

That is the problem with people. They dont follow history and learn its lessons. Look at all the Asian Tigers. Each had a military dictatorship or a dictatorship including a leader of vision and look how they have prospered.

Malaysia. South Korea. Indonesia. Taiwan. China. Need i say more?

Democracy is a shame. After a while all democracies turn towards dictatorships. The Holy Roman empire was only a democracy for roughly 200 years of its existance. The rest of the time, it was a complete dictatorship.

Pakistan is following history's course and finally has a leader with vision that Inshallah wont pass away any time soon.
