Why do Indians have such strange first names?

sambralian wise-ass,

if the identity you talk about takes denial of one's language and roots, it cant be much of an identity.

anyway, that wasnt my point. the point was, subcontinental muslims feel the need to go the persian way when it comes to names, despite the fact that they are as pagan as ethnic indian ones. how is that in keeping with universal brotherhood and all that jazz?

Many Bangladeshi Muslims use first names with Sanskrit meanings. You will find Sharmila Ahmed, Seema etc.

Many Indian Christians too have Sanskrit based names. Like Dinesh D'souza, Anup Thomas etc

Aah, another pair of Bharati Hindus living in denial that Muslims have an identity that transcends borders and nationality! <<<

sambrialian, sorry to puch holes, but this ‘TRanscending’ borders doesn’t seem to be the reality isn’t it?
Why else would 10 Arab heads of state keep away from Arab summit?

So who is in a denial here? YOU absolutely.

Denail 1: Rejecting HIndu heritage.
DEnial 2: Accepting a non-existent ‘Universal Transcend borders’ yada, yada stuff.

I know it’s hard for you to understand the concept of universal brotherhood of all Muslims especially if you’re not going to make a sincere effort to. <<

I don’t have to understand what doesn’t exist!!

queer just-ass,

it is obvious the definition of identity differs for both of us. My main identity is as a Muslim and it seems Hindus just can't digest that.

I don't see how subcontinental Muslims went the "Persian way". My name is a pure Muslim traditional name as is practically every Muslim's who I know personally. If you want a reason for that, I've stated it already.

muslim names have a veriety of many cultures.

western-muslim names
yousuf>>>>>>>>joseph
ibrahim>>>>>>>abraham
dawud>>>>>>>david
maria>>>>>>>maria
sara>>>>>>>>sara
sufia>>>>>>>sophia
yaqub>>>>>>>>jacob
yahya>>>>>>>>>jashua
marium>>>>>>>mary
alexander>>>>>sikandar

there are many many more.

jews-muslim names

musa, salman and marium are popular names among muslims and jews.

in english

musa>>>>>moses
salman>>>>solomon

sambralian,

there is nothing like a "traditional muslim name". deal with it. islam allows names in any language as long as they mean good things. if someone feels the need to pick pagan names in a non-native language, it is a sign of denial of his/her roots.

as for main identity being muslim, if it takes a persian name to prove your identity, it isnt an identity to begin with, just a charade.

Look Andhra, you're dragging me into a political debate here. But I'll just say this that all the ten leaders do NOT represent their respective people. Practically all are dictators one way or another except that they have the blessings of the Uncle Bush.

You really don't have to drum the non-existence of the transcending broders and everything. We know that people's priorities have changed mainly due to the injection of false nationalism. But I can assure you that most of the people (espeically the youth) are recognizing this problem. Besides, I think that the identity does exist except it has weakened. I have seen a lot of goodwill accorded to me personally over the years simply because I was a fellow Muslim by Arab and non-Arab Muslims alike.

Hindu hertitage: oh boy, lets not get started here, shall we? Indian hertitage I can understand and bear but Hindu heritage? Please, try not to reply when you're not in your senses.

lets not get into politics fellows...this is the culture forum.

Xtreme, My name is Yisrael Rabinowich. No James or Bobs or Tonys for me. My middle name is Mordichai. What's yours? Xtreme Bin Laden Ibne Bandooq wal Kartusee? How many middle names do you have? One does not need too many middle names to proves one's sihtheadedness.

So what do you want to know about Sardars names? Can't you define your question proper.

Only a generation and half ago it was not very uncommon to have names like Mehar Chand, Mehar Din, Mehar Singh...Iqbal Singh, Mohammad Iqbal ....Ghulab Chand, Ghulabudin, Ghulab singh etc in the same neighbourhood. and even if names were different ppl had a way to make them simiar..like 3 of my grandfathers langootiye yaar about 70 years ago were named..Kala....one was Kaleemudin, one was Kashmiri Lal but since he was a little darker(that was the reason they named him Kashmiri Lal to cheer him up becuz Kahsmiris were thought as fair colored)ppl still called him Kala and third one was Kala Singh.

I think names evolve and even the names that sound hip today will sound old and boring to the next generation 30 yrs from now.

Sikh names used to be relativly short, Banta Singh, Ganda Singh, Buta Singh, Amar Singh, Udham Singh, Bhagat Singh....that was 60 yrs ago...then our generation got fed up with them and wanted longer and different names..so we got names like...Udhampreet Singh, Harbhagat, Shivsharnjit Singh, Upkaar Kaur, Maninderjit, Gur Rattan Paul Singh etc etc... Now these names sound too long and most of the people of my generation are naming their kids short names..but different than the short names of 2 generatiosn ago...like no one names kids Ganda SIngh, Banta Singh, Santa Singh but the names are derived mostly from religious sounding words or words used in scriptures like...Simar Singh, Manpreet, Aekum Singh, Tripat Kaur, Karman Singh, Sumeet, Puneet etc.

Chann"Gur Rattan Paul Jagatjeet Singh Wadday Pairan Wala"Mahi

that's interesting Chan, cuz the sikhs i know in UK have generally been called David Singh, Jimmy Singh, Paul Singh, Pam singh, Mickey singh, etc.

maybe this trend has started changing just recently?

Paal Singh has been around for a long time...actually it used to be Paala Singh and then someone made it Paal Singh..and then Paul Singh. Jimmy(Jatinder), Tinku(Tajinder), Pam(parmjit), Sam(Simaranjit), Gary(Guridner) are all westernized nicks like "Kala" in my above post but you are right they are picking up as asli names instead of nicknames only.
some of them are mere pronunication variations..e.g I know on Shawn Singh.. Saun(Saawan) Singh is a very old name and I used to know a very bazurg guy back home when I was growing up...so now everytime I call him Shawn my tongue slips and says Saun.

If literacy rate inIndia is 65% which means 650,millions… have working knowledge of English

The vernacular regional language cannot be more than that .U.P. the largest state which speaks Hindi is 170 million only .

What should make hindu stick to sanskrit whicvh is only post aryan language .You might as well take persian /arabic for 1000 yrs muslim rule from 900 to 1700.Or in English for 200 english rule .

Bengali ,Assamese Telugu etc are only limited areas & only have few words from Sanskrit .Even the priest brahmin cannot convese or read write in sanskrit far from being fluent.

India is just as obsessed with dead language Sanskrit as Pakistan is with Persian Arabic culture whenthery both are not real .

the sindhis certainly will.

Are you Sindhi? how do you know? I did not know Sindhi know sanskrit

X_tremeji: Thank you so much for promoting a moniker for yours truly. Sorry to say, my name exhibits no loyalties. Therefore as in my passport and mandated by these United States, you can call me Mssr. Chaltahai Muhammad Ram Ke Saath Jesus ko cheyRne wala.

That's not a nice thing to say. I love some Indian names like Rahul and Dhruv.
