Re: Why calls to Pakistan have become expensive?

What we are seeing is cartelisation to benefit the few at the expense of the many. What the government needs to do is to tax the rich and benefit the poor and not tax the poor to benefit the rich.

Free competition and an efficient market will always lower prices rather than to increase prices.

Re: Why calls to Pakistan have become expensive?

Not a bad idea to raise 150 to 200 million $ per month.Tax us more, because people like me don't pay a freaking penny in taxes.

Re: Why calls to Pakistan have become expensive?

^ they are taxing the same people, on the basis of whom the country is running for the past many years. The ones who don't pay taxes mostly reside in the country.

Re: Why calls to Pakistan have become expensive?

Its not just a matter of increasing taxes as taxes alone cannot account for the substantial increase in prices. It is about creating a monopoly, stifling competition, and giving advantage and allowing a few operators to increase their profitability, in return these people have probably bribed some officials and the cost of all this will be paid by the public.

It is also true that Pakistan has been living beyond its mean for decades thanks to the expatriates who have bought their money to Pakistan whereas the bayghairat brigade have all looted Pakistan and taken their money abroad.

Re: Why calls to Pakistan have become expensive?

this whiney whine should stop now who got axed who is not. Certainly gov. will tax who can pay. If affluent Pakistani enjoys freewheeling for long time, they should not cry when we are talking about just cents. .

Re: Why calls to Pakistan have become expensive?

expatriates is not running country, they are just providing foreign currency. name a single large corporate project which was started by oversees Pakistanis, non-resident spend money on lavish houses & cars, that's about it.
don't even get me started.

Re: Why calls to Pakistan have become expensive?

And the foreign currency reserves dont matter? Many cities like Mirpur have been built by the expats. Btw what is Bestway Cement? Anyhow, what has the government done to improve the taxation in the country which itself is paying less than sub Saharan Africa?

Re: Why calls to Pakistan have become expensive?

Foreign currency is very important as without it the rupee would be in freefall and prices of everything would shoot up.

Bestway Cement, UBL Bank (after privatisation) come to my mind although there would be more no doubt.

Even if expatriates spend money on cars and houses still means that they are contributing to the economy of Pakistan, for example a car needs fuel, servicing, maintenance, insurance. Also half the real estate schemes in Pakistan would not even get off the ground without the support of expatriates.

Re: Why calls to Pakistan have become expensive?

UBL Bank = 55% own by NBP & rest Al-Nahyan family of UAE
Bestway = Sir Anwar Pervaiz of UK - minority share holder

No one is saying a word on oversees Pakistani contribution but it yikes me to core when oversees Pakistanis implies they run the country. Real estate schemes have nothing to do with overall economy given they speculate prices and the bubble bust after few year take the whole economy into emergency ward.

Also the major share holder in foreign exchange is by labor class of Middle East not by Europe & North American Pakistanis. Figures are publicly available, but its the oversees Pakistanis of North America & Europe who cry the most.

Re: Why calls to Pakistan have become expensive?

now this is the issue, not the other one.

Re: Why calls to Pakistan have become expensive?

Lol if Mr Pervez is a minority shareholder in Bestway Cement than who is the majority shareholder?

The government of Pakistan held only 19% of the shares in the Bank. 31% were held by Mr Pervez and his group in 2010 although that may have gone up if the government sold more shares later. Making him the single largest shareholder irrespective.

Real estate allows people in Pakistan to get decent houses as expatriates put up significant capital in a project and wait years before it is developed, which would otherwise not have got off the ground. They create jobs in Pakistan. The pay money to landowners so that they can live comfortably and give their children a good start in life. They spend more money in Pakistan in one month than a average family would do in one year, thereby again contributing to the economy. We help the country in two ways, one by helping create jobs and then by keeping inflation in check in Pakistan. This in an important help for Pakistan. We also give money to charities there.

Expatriate is an expatriate irrespective of where he is in the world. We don't run Pakistan (unfortunately) but we do more for it than people sitting there do, who enjoy all the perks without performing anything for the country.

Re: Why calls to Pakistan have become expensive?

Of course expats are not running the country otherwise we will be in much better shape than we are today, expats are filling govt's pockets that is all. There are many expats I know who went to Pakistan, started their businesses, got looted, cheated and made their way back to out of Pakistan, thanks to lawlessness. When the sitting president happens to be someone who looted an expat who came to invest in the country then how many expats will actually come to invest here?

Re: PPP & Zardari's GIFT to Overseas Pakistanis

Who was the sole service provider when the rate was $1/min? Let me guess: PTCL! Now we want to go back to the old system. It seems Pakistan is going backwards in every way.
