That's not directly related to topic. THough answer is Yes, as well they paid a tax for being non-muslim.

If you live in US you are faced with the US secular jurispudence does’nt matter what belief you have, same in islamic state does’nt matter what belief you have, the islamic judicicial system will be implemented !

Hinduism is a culmination of various philosophies on how to live. It is a way of life.

i dont believe Hindus were as secular 200 years ago as they are now, so I think modernity has a role to play in it. secularism therefore isnt an inherent feature. As opposed to Islam, a lot of Hinduism is easier to see as mythology (instructive fables) along the lines of nordic or ancient greek faiths, instead of religion (divine word where every story described occurred exactly as stated). stories where the main characters are half men half animals, people with eight arms and stuff of similar vein are hard to believe literally for urban Hindus. Which is why for a lot of Hindus, Hinduism has the same role a lifestyle philosophy might have, and might not be comparable to the religion a Muslim or Jew might have. Pooja might be before an elephant's statue, but I dont know whether many urban Hindus believe the statue can actually harm or benefit their lives apart from providing a source of meditation.

and people can be very secular if they're not "religious". it would be an equally fair question in my mind to ask why people who do yoga are secular.

atleast that is my reading of it based on the Hindus I know.

aside from taxation, were the rules for divorce implemented per Islam even if the parties involved were Hindus?

anjann, stop blaming the wrong people. I know it hurts whne (like ak47) talk bakwas about your country, but be a little civilized, and dont blame the wrong people. PTV has never predicted the end of India nor reported any such bakwas.

Back to topic in my opinion the reason hindus are secular is because firstly the system in government is secualr so what you expect the people to be like and secondly Hinduism has no political aspect to its belief it is strictly a set if ritual beliefs and that is why the people will adopt a system that rules their lifes affairs and at present time they have adopted the capitalist secular model.

If Hindus were not secular by nature they would have brought down all mosques built in mid centuries after demolishing Hindu worship places.
