The REAL topic is about who was the head of state of India and Pakistan in 1947… and the fact remains that both countries were Commonwealth Realms at the time. The terms of partition created both as constitutional monarchies, with King George VI as their Kings.
The most senior government official physically in India was Governor-General Louis Mountbatten, and in Pakistan was Governor-General Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Both were personally appointed by King George VI to be his resident representative in their countries.
Indeed, Pakistan’s recognition of the the Royals could be seen in Pakistan sending a delegation for Elizabeth II’s coronation as Queen of Pakistan in London in 1953, and in providing symbols of Pakistan to be embroidered on her coronation dress.
