Re: When someone challenges your beliefs

that's EXACTLY what i've been doing for almost entire time i've been on GS...there is no point in arguing with people who are disrespectful and have no intention of understanding the argument itself. i say what i've to say and then i let it go because you can NOT convince someone who does NOT wish to be convinced. some argue for the sake of argument...i refuse to engage to such people. :)

Re: When someone challenges your beliefs

here a few relevant quotes from the holy Quran,

3:187) **You shall surely be tried in your possessions and in your persons and you shall surely hear many hurtful things from those who were given the Book before you and from those who set up equals to God. But if you show fortitude and act righteously, that indeed is a matter of strong determination.

4:141)** **And He has already revealed to you in the Book that, when you hear the Signs of Allah being denied and mocked at, sit not with them until they engage in a talk other than that; for in that case you would be like them. Surely, Allah will assemble the hypocrites and the disbelievers in Hell, all together;

4:149) Allah likes not the uttering of unseemly speech in public, except on the part of one who is being wronged. Verily, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

**if you have any other, pls quote.

Re: When someone challenges your beliefs

Wise men through the ages - inspired people to follow a set 'code of conduct', based on their knowledge & experience. This 'code of conduct' is what we call 'religion'.
To add awe & fear - they all called it a message from 'GOD'.

Each Religion was followed because it gave a structure to human life and ensured socially accepted rules and regulations.

Unfortunately, these very rule, have pitted humans against other humans - more people have been killed in the name of religion than anyother cause!!

So, it is best to keep quiet and not justify yourself - when others try to question your 'code of conduct'. To each their own.

Re: When someone challenges your beliefs

^ I’m sorry but I’m not going to keep quiet* if someone tells me Islam wants me to kill everyone. That is a misunderstanding and an accusation and that is something I’d speak up about. Basically, I’d speak up if I think your argument is flawed but I don’t mind your opinion. You could tell me you don’t approve of religion because you think it creates differences among people. Fair enough. But this statement “More people have been killed in the name of religion than anyother cause!!” it is a pointless statement unless you can back it up with stats. I could say more people have been killed for political reasons than religious reasons. What makes me any more wrong than you? This is all I would say and then whatever their response may be, I won’t be interested in a debate.

  • Unless ofcourse they’re only saying it to mock/taunt in which case I will ignore them which will annoy them to no end. =p

Thanks to everyone else for their replies :k:

Re: When someone challenges your beliefs

Barbie - throughout History millions have been killed in the name of Religion:

In North Ireland - Catholic (IRA) against the Protestants - fighting going on since ages.
The Catholic Serbs against the Muslim Bosnians. The Serbs claim 600 years ago Muslims killed all the Christians??
The Indian partition - Hindus & Muslims killing each other - some say a million died.
Germany during WW2 - millions of Jews killed & burned in concentration camps by Christian Germans.
Christian Armanien - some say a million were killed by the Turks during early 1900s.

In China - the Tibetian Buddists have been rebelling against the control on their religion, so are the Muslim Uighars - they are supressed (or killed).

During the Bangladesh war - Hindus were hounded & killed.
In India the Gujrat riots - killed hundreds of Muslims.

Even during the Roman ages - they prosecuted anyone who followed Jesus.
Even the prophet Mohammed - was prosecuted & several of his companions killed for their Belief on Islam. And so on and so forth -

Live & let live is the best policy. To each their own beliefs.

Re: When someone challenges your beliefs

The real challenge is when you argue with people who do have a good knowledge of Islam.

Re: When someone challenges your beliefs

When someone drives a perfectly good car and gets into an accident, you blame the driver not the car. If people are killing in the name of religion, you blame the ignorant people not the religion unless the religion is telling you to go out and kill kill kill. My religion tells me a good muslim is one whose hands and tongue the mankind is safe from. It tells me if I kill one innocent man, it would be as horrendous as if I have killed the whole of humanity. It tells me murder is gunah-e-kabeera. So if the likes of taalibans are killing in the name of religion, you call *them *idiotic not the religion. Heck these people have no imaan to begin with, how can you associate these lunatics with any religion. Have no wars been initiated for the sake of power, treasure and land??? Should we oppose the ownership of wealth as much as we oppose religion then?

Definitely challenging for me as I have a tonne more to learn myself. This is one reason I engage in religious discussions online, it helps you learn so much. So many of my own misunderstandings have been cleared by fellow GSers.

Re: When someone challenges your beliefs

It is an opportunity of life time when some one challenges your beliefs but you can only take advantage of it if you really know what you believe and that you have proof for it and can prove it.

If you are an unfortunate person who has fallen in trap of make beliefs then no way you can answer the challenge. Better give up your make beliefs and search for something based on proof.

In my experience I found people have no idea what proof is and how it proves a claim.

Why not try defining proof and think out ways of proving things. See how far you succeed.

For example, the quran is the proof that it is word of God and it proves it is word of God but does anyone here know anything about proof and proving?

We are used to make beliefs and sectarianism, never bother to find out truth as to what islam is and what it is not. We are more into tafaseer books, hadith books and fiqh books rather than the quran.

Re: When someone challenges your beliefs

Barbie: you raised valid points - yet the people drivng their (religion) cars do not have accidents, they purposely drive over others (religions)..

Even the KKK & south africa claimed 'segregation' was endorsed in the Bible, and exploited, murdered in the name of religion.
The Taliban & other extremists, must have found some justification in the Quran, to go and blow up people. Some call themselves the 'Gods Army', same as the crusades - they thought they were 'gods army....
Sunnis kill shia's, and via versa, even ahmediayas - in the name of religion?.
Catholics & Protestants have been fighting, killing for generations.
Jerusalem - crusades, palestine & Jews, all these wars, battles have been going on for centures.
Hindus & sikhs and Muslims - have all been fighting/killing for hundred of years.

That is why I do not want to get into argument with anyone on religion, passions get inflamed, friendships destroyed. To each their own beliefs.

WWII is by far the bloodiest war ever fought. Human and material losses are incomparable with the rest of the wars. Just for your information, WWI and WWII were not driven by religion or religious zealots. That was nations/races fighting with each other to get an upper edge. Jews were badly treated at racial level by German 'National Socialists' who considered jewish race as enemies of germany. I have read it somewhere that the destruction and human loss wrought by WII alone was greater than the loss of all previous known wars put together.

Re: When someone challenges your beliefs

Practically, I have hardly been challenged/questioned about my faith. People wanting to learn more have asked me questions, and these I can answer to the best of my knowledge. Though I can't think of any particular incident right now, if I'm questioned about something I don't have sound knowledge of, I politely tell them that I'm not qualified to answer their question and if they like, they could simply refer it to an aalim. There have been cases where I've responded to people with simple logic, without needing to get into theology.
