I grew up in the ME, and we all shared our lunches or a lot of kids did. And at times I would even ask ammi to make extra lunches coz others ate my lunch.
And some ppl I have come across who grew up in the UK and USA in 1970s and 80s said they had had pork coz they had picked something off of their friends' plates during lunch time.
This is one of the reasons I am even afraid to send Jr. to a daycare/ baby sitter coz of the food that gets served in their home. Even if they make vegetarian stuff it might be cooked in a pan that has been used to cook pork in.
Am I crazy/paranoid, do/did any of you go through these feelings prior to sending your kids out to school or daycare ?
There are many schools and childcare who don't serve any port. The school district I have worked for in past had a no pork menu, my present school has a no pork menu, My mother's school has a no pork menu. These days a good majority of schools is moving towards no pork menus.
I think my only issue with school lunches is the quality, some schools have good quality food. My moms school serve pretty decent quality food and healthy as well. I don't like the quality of served at my school.
The way we have our lunch break in Pakistan or middle east is very different from US. Here in US children are supervised during lunch time. They do have some strong rules about sharing food, food allergies/restrictions.
Aw man, it depresses me SO much when I see whats inside some of my kids lunchboxes. All the Pakistani boys I have taught at my currrent school never eat their lunch. One's mum used to force him to eat honey sandwiches and he hated honey, she wouldnt listen to me and instead used to ask me to force him to eat the sandwiches. One of them this year gets 2 chicken nuggets for his lunch :/
I spoke to both mums at parents evening and encouraged them to buy small flasks where they can put pasta or rice or whatever it is that their kid eats and it will at least be warmish.
One of the sikh girls I taught had pakoray for her lunch once, her mum asked me if it was ok cos that's all the girl wanted to eat, I said it would be ok for one day only and then explained to the girl that she cant have pakoray everyday, she was quite sad. Bless her.
I've ate school dinners at work sometimes when they have jacket potatoe or vegi wraps cos they are nice and Peter the school cook is very good, he makes everything from scratch, his lemon cake is SO good!
peanut butter sandwich + a yoghurt + water + a fruit + some mixed nuts + a cheesestick
pasta with some meat and the rest of the above
chicken drumsticks and a carb such as bread slices or pasta and the rest of the above
boneless chicken pieces [grilled or fried], and the rest..
They don't eat everything, as in ALL of it, so when they get home i fix them another meal that has veggies in it as well. I hope I'm doing the right thing.
In my kids' school, they have a separate table for kids who wither brings nuts or for the kids for allergies. It works out great. The K-2 kids eat lunches in their classrooms. Those who buy order in the morning [lunch lady comes to each room to take orders] and the lunch is delivered to the child in the classroom. Third grade onwards eat in the lunchroom.
Niksik, wat do u do if there is left over? Like sandwiches, chickn. Etc When they dont eat alll of it
Have you heard of mommy the garbage can? :D
Well, if it's been out there for too long, especially if has meat, I throw it out. I am learning to give them just the right amount but again, I'm not perfect at it yet :(.
LOL
Yes i know but the reason I asked u cuz i dont like to throw out food. My kids go to babysitter and i give them right amount of food, so it doesnt end up in garbage and i am perfect at it :p

I have seen that too. It must be nice to have a school cook and all. I don't about UK but the school lunches here in public school are filled with non healthy preservative filled options. I have tasted some things and they taste bad too. I wish they had a microwave. It would make things easier.
Every school has school a school cook, well every school iv ever been to or worked in. Every child must have at least 2 portions of vegi. I've spent many a lunchtimes sat with some of my kids who dont eat or even try vegis, hard work. I remember watching an episode of Jamie Oliver in America and something really weird about there must be at least 3 carb items on the menu or something of the sort, I didnt watch much of it after that as Jamie annoys me :/
Also we have a no chocolate or crisps rule in our school, and the kids are only served chips on a Friday, fishfingers and chps...its a Brit thing.
