Muta was allowed by the Prophet(saas) and later disallowed by him. Yes even married men were allowed to contract muta without the consent of thier wife/wives. However it was disallowed by him and that is what the majority of the muslims believe, well atleast the sunnis. Shia's believe that it was not disallowed by the Prophet but I'm not sure if all shia's believe that or not.
