I would definitely wear a chiffon sari with some light embellishments...preferably in the same colour as the sari fabric....so it's not too bold but elegent nonetheless.
No dress, gown, skirt or outfit beats an elegantly worn sari.
If you are simply not confident enough of yourself to carry this off in a place where you will be singled out....wear a formal trouser suit and use the dupatta as a stole.
