what makes us a nation?

Hi y’all,
after countless wrangling sessions with my desi and non desi friends…I have still not been able to figure out what makes pakis a unique nation?
i mean i understand we are one under the flag of islam and its due merit to other religions, but what keeps us together? (:P) besides borders, are pakis just to lazy to be happy with being identified /defined as a person who hails or is a citizen of pakistan?

hmmm....

pakistan ka matlab kia? la ilaha illallah

thats what we were taught in school atleast :)

but that's so incorrect, we are no where even close to that claim.

Rahi Masum Raza, an Indian Muslim, writer, film script writer and poet by profession, says that he does not understand the formation and existance of Pakistan.

And are we supposed to take Mr Rahi Masum Raza seriously because he does not understand the formation and existance of Pakistan?

lola_the_chimp, the first identifying factor for Pakis*tanis* is that they will bash you completely if you call them 'pakis' and they get a hold of you. Secondly, the last sentence in your post is so badly worded, that its difficult to make any sense out of it; so responding to it is futile.

What other "nations" exist for any other reason besides "border"? Saudis are "Saudis" because that "Arab" land got independent under "Al-Saud". There is nothing "unique" about them, there may be "minor" differences from other areas, but I bet those differences begin to diffuse as you move close their borders.

Even in US, many states have different cultural heritages-a mixture of Spanish, native Indians and what not. Over the time they have been able to remove that, perhaps "evolved" out of it.

I don't think "geographical borders" coincide with "national borders". Nations are now defined by borders. Look at India, there are so many traditions, many regions have their own local traditions. I don't think that you can pick any one region and say that it represents India.

Similarly, Pakistan consists of many cultures. What holds us together is neither "culture", nor "religion".... just borders.

A nation of one billion souls and such a deep inferiority complex.

His lack of comprehension is his own problem.

Don't take him seriously, but its a genuine question in my opinion, why was Pakistan formed? Was it formed for people who practise Islam or for people who claim that they are Muslims? Is Pakistan an Islamic Republic? or is it a secular country?

Then please stop claiming that Pakistan is an Islamic Republic, call it the Peoples Republic or something, stop using Islam to identify Pakistan.
