Re: What is your investment philosophy
In another thread, we discussed the downside to buying back shares at high prices. The Friday Apr 6 12 issue of WSJ mentioend JP Morgan will buy back sgares only if they are less than 45$/share. that amounts to 1.3 times tangible book value. Buffett prefers 1.1 times as comparison. This is a refressing departure from the excesed of the past, when Citigroup bouht back 32 billion worth of shares between 2001 and 2007. In 2007, it bought back $8 billion at $48.6 average. On a split adjusted basis, its current price is $3.5!!! So they paid 14 times the current price, only to need $52 billion fromthe Govt when the bubble burst.
JP Morgan, while for the most part avoiding this disastrous buyback, did pay $48.6 per share in 2007 when it bought back $8B worth. It looks like JP Morgan got wiser about buybacks.
My 2 paisa - about time.

^ Khaan saab, this thread cannot take too much traffic. The administrators informed me that two posts from viewers within 15 minutes may overwhelm bandwidth.

Prof. Jeremy Seigel makes the case that over 40 years (1960 to 2000) IBM. Was a growth stock while standard oil was axvalue stock. It grewxfar far less than IBM. But its returns were superior.
The price you pay matters.
Ditto China vs Brazil 1990 to 2000. China grew exponentially but poor return. Brazil reverse!
