what is wrong with canadians? International buy nothing day?

So I get all kinds of junk mail..and then i saw this today. Who has time for this lameness, I knwo its cold in Canada and all but surelt they can find a better use of their time.

Now this group, do they cut off their water, power, gas and phone line, because like it or not, we are buyign something every second, unless you are in a remote hut in newfoundland. and they seem to be so proud of their $20K fundraising.

anyways read and laugh..

International Buy Nothing Day has been happening annually on the last Friday of November for the past several years. Initially created by the Media Foundation in Vancouver, BC, this “holiday” has taken on a life of its own. It’s become a time for consumers to rethink their roles in the global economy, to exert their power by not spending money, to send a message to the global corporations and consumerist regimes under which many people live, and to re-assess their lives as consumers. Activities for the day vary, ranging from just not buying, to taking a more activist approach and sponsoring events at shopping malls, such as credit card cut-ups and staging various sorts of pranks and theatre pieces. The following message is from the Media Foundation about this year’s Buy Nothing Day, which occurs 28 November.

Dear Culture Jammers,

The Buy Nothing Day bulls are seeing red, and it’s full-charge ahead
toward Friday, November 28th.

What’s happening on the media front? We’re aiming anti-ads at millions
of people worldwide parked in front of their TV screens.

Last year, you elected the burping pig as the official BND
spokesperson. We raised $20,000, and then sent piggy to market at CNN.
The first salvo in this year’s campaign will come Monday, November
24th, when our Big Mac spot airs on CNN’s Inside Politics. In the
donations department, we still have a long way to go. You can preview
the anti-ads and lend support to the cause here:

Of course, the heart of Buy Nothing Day isn’t at CNN. Instead, it’s
with the people, planning pranks, potlucks and barter fairs - and
changing minds. Creativity is always the name of the game. Share your
plans with others at the contacts page:

and check out some of the hot jam ideas from our Jam Aid program at:

Good luck with all your BND preparations.
Happy Jamming,

It's not just in Vancouver... other parts of Canada also host this day on an annual basis.

Waisay i wouldn't mind having a remote hut in Newfoundland :o

adbusters have done this for a while now (buy nothing day).

Check out the corporate flag (another campaign they did)…

Adbusters make a lot of valid points, while some will just write them off as leftist loonies I don’t thinks that’s the case.

UTD, Do they have this campaign all over the US ? i wonder what about other countries, like the UK or Brazil, etc. or is this only a North America campaign?

I've only seen the corporate flag in the United States form, you should suggest to them to make a variety of different country flags with the logos, that's a good idea.
