What is the point in having a U.S. military base everywhere?

Interesting responses and articles.

Is it illegal to put other countries military bases in the U.S.? Let's say a country wanted to do it. Impossible unless they invaded or came to aid the U.S.? Thanks.

No law that I know of. The U.S. trains foreign militaries / holds joint training on U.S. Bases from time to time but there are no foreign bases within the U.S.

Munni,

What no one has really said here is that the US liberally pays the countries for a long term lease of their land. Having a base increases the local economy, and insures that the host country will not be attacked.

We do not require the protection of other countries, nor are any other countries wealthy enough to pay us to lease our land to them. For the most part the US is far more politically secure and stable than the host countries. The US, Australia, and the UK frequently share naval ports and land bases, and aircraft facilities. In that sense there is significant cooperation, but no permanent basing rights.
