Re: What is anti-Islamic about your kid reading Harry Potter?
hmmm...not in our school district. Kindergarten I guess thats the case. But in first grade reading they did a few month classroom topic on "Great writers" and they went over alot of the classics, foreign and american writers, contemporary and classic authors, who wrote what etc. Reading is so encouraged in our district, they have all sorts of activities, book groups, acheivement awards etc. Each child gets a reading list for the summer, it contains classics, fiction, non-fiction and light reading and if they complete the list, they will get a letter of acheivement from our local congresswoman. I dont know about other school districts, I know we're in a top-rated one so this may not hold true for all schools.
Anyway, my point was that even if you dont consider JK rowling to be a great writer as far as style and grammar...if its something that captivates your little one, it will be a wonderful motivator for them to read more. kwim?
Re: What is anti-Islamic about your kid reading Harry Potter?
As far as I've seen its more like following a trend rather than a hobby to read the books advertised in media. Its a well advertised book by media and schools and this is what I most hate about it. But its just the way I look at things, without any offense to Harry Potter or other market books fans.

Well that's a silly reason to "hate" anything. I'm not saying that you need to love the books, or even read them. But I think you should avoid making judgement calls and stating "facts" when you know little about them.
I think it has more to do with the reading skills rather than the age.
I've heard they don't encourage children to read classics in Schools these days, is it true? And if its true, is that the reason why each one in six adults can't read complicated English in America?
It's not true. But the schools are way more burdened than they were 30 years ago. And the students these days are very different, with a very different set of learning issues and approaches to language. So just because it doesn't look like what we used to do, doesn't mean they aren't being taught. Reading is about practice and passion. If the only reading a child is encouraged to do is what the school assigns, students will be left behind. Parents need to do their part too, and in much of the country, they just don't.

go away.....stop having a go at me, "I find your reasons silly", who cares if you find them silly or not.
Re: What is anti-Islamic about your kid reading Harry Potter?
^ What a lovely and mature role model you are for the children! I'm speaking to you in a civil manner, though much of what you've said is hardly deserving of it, and this is your response?

Yeah now go ahead and sue me and take my children in your custody. Calling someone's reasoning is silly is not very civilized Muhtarima.
Re: What is anti-Islamic about your kid reading Harry Potter?
Calling me silly, what you expect, phoolon kay haar from me in return? Why do you always find ways to call me a bad role model for my kids? Do you personally know me, heck no.
Now go and write in your blog how evil hareem01 is. Shabash jao.
^ Thank you for editing your initial reply to me. I suppose it's best to hide your rude nature.
Oh I didn't edit anything.....I add few things in it. Look at you, before you called me silly and now you're using "rude nature for me. Seriously, what's wrong with you? Is this your civility?
PS: I hate harry potter and J K rowling. Kar lo jo kerna hai. Utter Childishness.
I have also heard people saying that children shouldnt be encouraged to read HP. Their reason being that its all about magic and magic (sihr) is haraam. Kids have gone crazy over these books, dress up as wizards, HP decorated bedrooms and schoolbags, everyone thinking its the coolest thing, so at a young age they are getting these ideas mixed in their heads etc -so thats why they say that its not good, for kids to be so crazy about something that is haraam in the first place. At least that is the reasoning I have heard from those who oppose their kids reading HP books
I do think its important to at least talk with kids about this. Like if they are reading it, then do use the opportunity to talk with them about how in Islam we dont have the concept of "good magic" and "bad magic", and why magic is haraam etc..
Hmm I think its popularity came from its captivating story, it really isnt a well written classic at all!! If its a well written classic you are looking for, then perhaps HP is not the best option ;)
Sorry to interject but why is Harry Potter being bashed so much? What about Twilight? Arent kids and teens as well going crazy with Twilight mania? Idolizing someone is not good right? What are people doing with Robby Patinson aka Edward? Girls are going crazy over him. That is unrealistic and superficial. It is a good read and I have read all 4 books of Twilight as well. There is sex in it, there is violence in it. Shouldnt these books be not read to children or shouldnt they be not allowed as well? Atleast Harry Potter does not have direct sex or anything. The most is a harmless kiss. I do not find anything wrong with Harry Potter. It is just harmless and a good read for the children. G rated and fun.
LOL this way it will be like we cannot read our children anything at all.
Harry Potter, Twilight, Dan Brown books ( Da Vinci Code, Angels&Demons) and others, it is just a phase that children go through. Once all the hype dies down, they move on.
Re: What is anti-Islamic about your kid reading Harry Potter?
You are hilarious, hareem. My point was simply that you obviously can choose if you read the book or your kids do or whatever. But assigning such a strong emotion such as hate to something just because it is popular doesn't make sense -- but people do it all the time. Also, as many people who have read the books have said, they ARE NOT about Dumbledore being gay. JK Rowling said it much later, and I think, to gain media attention. I think it was a bad move on her part, frankly. It's interesting because none of the teachers at Hogwartz have any sexuality at all. They don't even have spouses or children. It's like to be a teacher you have to give up everything else in your life, which is not surprising for a children's book, I guess, but it's too bad.

You are right but I think you are taking the word "hate" too seriously, I used this word but it doesn't mean I said it with strong emotions, we can't detect emotions without looking at a face, can we?
You could have said the same thing without calling me "silly", "rude nature" and now "hillarious" but I guess its too much too ask......anyway, my apologies.
Really, its embarrasing for us adults to be fighting over a silly children's book.
