It is a deep Sufi acknowledgement and warning that with knowledge comes the fitnah of arrogance. The scholars are most periled by things like arrogance, pride, luxury, elitism and these are not for us to judge for a person may have an outwardness of grandeur but is really not that way inside. So it is definitely something we are taught to look out for. Sidi Ahmad Zarruq who wrote the Poor Man’s Book of Assistance clearly describes these pitfalls and we are given methods to navigate out of these areas. Some Sufis called the Malamatiyyas Malamatiyya - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - would go to excess to tame themselves of arrogance, but there is another position in Islam and that is we must not beguile or dishonour ourselves. So that position by such Malamatis was rejected by the main body of Sufis. Although when you read about them you can’t help feel some sort of inclination towards their intent.
