I was browsing through BBC and tripped on this article Asylum applications fall sharply and I was surprised to see India’s name with Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. I mean if they are such a great secular democracy as they claim to be, then why such an exodus?
Sadly, I met a Pakistani the other day who was a Punjabi but told me how he applied for asylum in the US about a decade ago based on 'persecution he faced in Pakistan', though he admits that was all made up, but I wondered how such things would bring about a negative portrayal of life in our country.
I wanna know about the Turks too but the Indians proportions might not be that bad.

Still, I wanna know on what basis the Indians are applying for Asylum? Being of lower cast? Christians for the fear of uncertainty or Muslims from Gujrat? Or are these Patels’ who just want to open a new joint in UK?
Indians are running because at the mopment they are still a 3rd world country with a population broadly jahil enough to vote in a govt which has it's roots in religious nationalism - if that makes sense.
Long term though assuming the projected economic growth continues as expected, the numbers fleeing will probably decrease assuming India becomes an economic player as most are predicting. Pakistan could probably also follow this path or it could take the Lajjo/AQ option and become a south eastern version of Beirut. Actually we should make that former Beirut as I hear it's thriving once again these days.
AJ yaar, there's no one to eat the potatoes in Ireland. They're all in the US. In India there would be 100 people all fighting over the same tomato. Where's the connection?
LOL Adamjee!!! these tomatoes are in plenty supply in the Islamic hell of UAE, Kuwait, Muscat, Saudi escaping from the land of milk and honey in millions.
Indians need transit visas in UK

NEW DELHI: To check the growing menace of illegal immigration, Britain
has announced that Indians will need a Direct Transit Visa (DATV) from
Thursday to travel through the country.
“It is a fact that there is a significant level of abuse of the UK
immigration control committed by Indian nationals,” British High
Commission officials said.
Between January to June 2003 there is evidence to indicate that Indian
nationals accounted for 40 per cent of cases where passengers able to
transit the UK without a visa and who then sought to stay in Britain
illegally or by making an asylum claim, involved Indian nationals, the
High Commission said.
During 2002, around 2000 Indian nationals applied for asylum in the
UK. Indications are that the number this year will be even higher,
officials added.
In the same period, some 400 arrived without any documents and 270
plus using forged documents.
** Indian nationals accounted for the highest number of asylum
applications made on arrival in the UK. **

Madhanee, they use the word "Indians" to refer to Cherokees and the Chickahominys too. Right now our friends from Bombay need to say "cheese" when they enter the US under the glorious VISIT program. Thats not likely to change, any time soon. They will keep on looking till cows come home (no pun).

spock did he apply as an oppressed and hunted MQM member. I know some cases like that too. :)
Strictly speaking, this is not a case of illegal immigration but one of legal application for asylum, even though the details are still unknown. According the Federal Refugee Commission in Canada, 38,900 cases of asylum application were received, with Chinese and Pakistanis leading the list, followed by Mexicans and Columbians. The number does not include illegal immigrants.
Yes have heard of people who posed as being persecuted to get asylum in UK. A friend in Canada was telling me that they have allowed gay marriages. We were joking that soon we would have Pakistanis posing as gay couples seeking asylum …
Now how do the Canadian authorities plan on verifying the genuine cases?
Both coutires have much to be proud of and both are a work in progress, be proud of what you have and what they're becoming. Anything is garbage, hippy crap maybe but true.
