Re: what are the characteristics of a good parent?
Perhaps, a good balance between responsiveness and control to instill a positive discipline in your kids. It's easier said than done though... because a predilection towards order can make you authoritarian while if you become overly responsive, you can end up spoiling your kids.
Also, I had a discussion with a friend recently who talked about the importance of psychological autonomy that you need to gradually provide to your kids as they grow up... and how many parents have a hard time differentiating this from behavioral autonomy.
Re: what are the characteristics of a good parent?
I'm not sure if I'm a good parent or not. Only time will tell. But I can say that my parents are good parents because they have provided well for us yet given us room and created an environment to seek more. They have always been there for us that we really didn't need mentorship or friendship outside of the home, not that there's anything wrong with that. They've given us the freedom to express our opinions and have listened to us. Most imporantly, they created a glue for us where we feel the strength of the family, ignore the negatives and feel comfort in the relationships. One other thing I'd like to add is that there are issues in every home but if kids can be protected from emotional instabilities of parents, they have more security as individuals.
