What are NGOs? Can someone elaborate and give me some examples? What is their purpose and success?
Non- Governmental (public) Organisations
These organisations work in Western developed and rich countries as well as in third world countries. All non-governmental charity organisations anywhere in the world are NGOs. All NGOs are supposed to do good work for people. Many work in their own countries and some work at international level (like Red Cross (Red Crescent in Muslim world), OXFAM, etc).
Some have done a lot of good work for people, especially poor, and without any agenda, for instance, Edhi trust, Ansar Burney trust, APWA (All Pakistan Women Association), etc
Some do good work but they have their political (possibly foreign) agenda ... for instance Imran Khan Cancer hospital (financed by ... Well, better not say :))
Some do good work but have foreign agenda in their mind as they work on foreign donations as their main source of funds (including UN, WB, etc), like Human-right organisations in Pakistan under Asma Jahangir
Some do good work associating themselves with religion as their charity base, like Islamic relief, Christian aid, most Madrasas in Pakistan, etc.
Some are in this field for earning money from foreign (and local) donations (they have foreign contacts so can get donations in the name of charity, and do good work with a part of money and use most of it to live in luxury).
And so on. If you have good rich contacts, we can start NGO in Pakistan too (joking) :)
