Please read modern health science. This old opinion piece blames leprosy on pork for crying out loud.
Much has changed since 1897, much knowledge has been gained. Many studies have been done. Heck, we still had an Islamic Empire when this thing was written.
^Trichinia, tapeworms are not any more related to pork in 2007....that makes sense. Ask your family doc, even he/she will state that document of 1897 to be true very valid even these times.
Not all Christians eat pork, my Ethiopian co-worker who is Christian follows her own church where the Old Testament is held on to, thereby forbidding pork. She also tries to eat kosher.
There are a few sects of Christianity that do not consume pork. It is forbidden in Islam to eat the meat of a pig, but it isn't haraam to look at one, touch one, wear one, or read a book about it. I really discourage my kids from saying that pigs are evil, because none of the animals that Allah (swt) created are evil. There are certainly logical reasons for not eating pork, but I try not to get into that either.
Pigs are intelligent animals, as anyone who grew up in the rural US can tell you. Sheep and cattle are far more stupid, and chickens win hands-down the award for filthiest animal on the farm. They actually follow around the livestock and eat the grain from their feces. Anyhooo....
Teggy - having seen them on my grandparents farm, I can tell you that pigs, like most animals, prefer to be outdoors in the sun during good weather, won't typically overeat (unlike humans, most livestock do NOT overeat just because food is available), and only have sex if the female is in heat and ready to breed (which almost always results in offspring), and pigs certainly do not lack the will to fight. They are some of the most agressive animals on a farm, when provoked. Don't know where you found your info, but it was obviously written by someone with NO experience with livestock. I have yet to see any livestock engaging in casual sex, btw!
....but it isn't haraam to look at one, touch one, wear one.....
are you sure?
I think we cant wear anything made out of pig skin, it is considered NAJISS just like a dog, if you come into contact you have to cleanse yourself as whatever comes into contact becomes napaak.
There is a difference of opinion among the Scholars regarding this, according to Shaf’i school of thought its impure(najas) and thats why is haram, Malikis consider it makruh(disliked) and according to others its ok to use external parts of the pig after cleaning them as there is no direct reference for the prohibition of the use of external parts in Qur’an and hadith.
"As for your question, Dr. Abdul-Fattah Ashoor, professor of Qur’anic Exegesis, at Al-Azhar University, states:
“Referring to some of the categories of prohibited things, Allah Almighty says: “ Forbidden unto you (for food) are carrion and blood and swine flesh, and that which hath been dedicated unto any other than Allah…” (Al-Ma`dah: 3)
Contemplating over the meaning of the above verse as well as other verses revealed in the same context, we notice that what is prohibited is eating; but it needs to be stressed that string of necessity is attached to this rule.
Referring to the string of necessity, Allah Almighty says: “He hath forbidden for you only carrion and blood and swine flesh and that which hath been immolated in the name of any other than Allah; but he who is driven thereto, neither craving nor transgressing, lo! then Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (An-Nahl: 115)
So it is clear that eating of the above-mentioned is prohibited, and it is only made lawful in case of dire necessity.
Focusing on the question in point, we can say that wearing gloves (or clothes) made of pigskin is not prohibited as it is clear that the forbidden thing is to eat pork.
**However, it is better for a Muslim to steer clear of wearing such clothes (i.e. clothes made of pig skin and the like), because the impurity of pig is not removed even by tanning their skins, as pigs are impure in themselves. So the issue here is not confined to eating or drinking as the above verses mentioned, but it is related to wearing something which is completely or partially impure. Hence it is better to avoid wearing jackets that are made of pigskin.” ** http://www.islamonline.net/servlet/Satellite?pagename=IslamOnline-English-Ask_Scholar/FatwaE/FatwaE&cid=1119503544582
Also wearing cosmetics made from pig fat is haram.
Pork and pork products are widely used as meat but also there bones and other parts.
To avoid pork in a non-Islamic country must be a nightmare as it's basically in almost all and every type of food or dish.
Even products like coats and couches and lots of other products and even medicines.
Plus whatever is left is then often grounded and used to feed other life stock or made into fish food or even to make fertilizer to grow vegetables and fruit, it's absolutely everywhere.
As for possible health issues these are all bogus.
Pork consumption is as high as 80% of all meat consumed in some countries and has been for centuries.
Ali, if pigs could only read, I think they'd be replying quite angrily at some of the posts here.
That doesn't include any human-type pigs who already are writing away here.
I remember once a muslim brother talking to me on this pigs. He mentioned something very weird. Something like that, "When Allah created animals he created one very individual of all -- the pig. Having a bad shaped face with weird looking nose and their souls were evil. The souls of evil jinnat are captured in them. Thats why Allah dislikes pigs and we should dislike them too."
I couldnt believe what I was hearing. Is that true?
A section of Indian society too feels eating pig is filthy & dirty, but I have started liking the pork products offered here (Australia), probably because here pigs are raised in a clean environment & fed protien rich diet to enhance their flavour.
Is a misnomer (or another justifcation) is that pork is not tasty. There is a reason it is the most widely consumed meat in the world - it's delicious.
^ Are you serious? You don't know if that is true or not? People will come up with some crazy stuff to find reasons to justify scripture.
Seminole, Im just "narrating" what I have heard. NOthing more and nothing less. I just wanted some muslim bros, sisters to analysis on that. Maybe there is some "evidence" on his sayings. But I have never believed in a persons word without using my own logic and brains :)
Sorry, but brains and logic dictate that pigs are not evil souls with evil janat captured in them. No other "evidence" is needed. Haven't you read the Quran?

Seminole, again. We do rely on hadiths as well. :)
