Fraudz,

If we left today, there would be a civil war in a month, and hundreds of thousands killed. Everyday we are protecting Muslim lives, for more than a decade before 9/11, conveniently forgotten by the Violent Jihadis. We have provided troops in the Sinai for 25 years, trying to live up to peace agreements between Israel and Egypt.

Duh.

OG

You are overlooking the fact that the riots and the violence is mostly against the US troops, so logically to stop these teh US would have to move out?

Actually the explanation is quite mature...or would you rather, have explanations involving the CIA and some secret Global takeover conspiracy theory?

Toddy,

"You are overlooking the fact that the riots and the violence is mostly against the US troops, so logically to stop these teh US would have to move out?"

I was refering to Bosnia, and I believe that violence there would flame up in a matter of days if NATO forces left.

^ my understanding is that they are now viewed as part of the problem at least in Kosovo

  • willing to stick their necks out and send troops.. Mayb they could have done a better job?*

Actually many Muslim countries tried too, there was a one sided UN arms embargo on Bosnia remember?

Zakk,

The longer you stay in one of these trouble spots, the longer someone will percieve you as the bad guy. Reagan dispatches Marines to Lebanon, Geo Bush I sends troops to Somalia. In the long run the people involved in the fight have to want to get along, and focus more on the future than on a history of conflict. It gets to the point where no matter what your values, there are certain areas of the world where the hate is so all consuming that Saints and Angels would avoid the place...

At best all we have done in Bosnia is keep the wolves away from the sheep for a decade. As we speak a Reserve element of the Army in Ohio is being called up to serve in Kosovo. We have a need for troops in Iraq, and we are still sending troops to Kosovo 12 years later. And there is no prospect for any political resolution, just a big bleeding open wound. I say pull the plug, and let 'em have at it....
