yupe, eating from the street stalls have their own feel to it! more desi! with the flies and the cars honking away at you!

Re: Vada Pavs goes global

Eeeeyugh! :(

Just surprised...you get pani poori, pao baji etc in Assam too?? I would imagine the cuisine to be completly different.

Re: Vada Pavs goes global

so basically its more or less the same what i would call a chip sandwich. Potatoes between bread!

I understand your excitement! :)

Re: Vada Pavs goes global

Yes thats what it is...just like a burger...cow between bread ha ha :)

Re: Vada Pavs goes global

Does anybody get Indian pav in the desi stores where they live(outside india...duh)?

Re: Vada Pavs goes global

That is because you are missing the main ingrediant when you make it at home which is....................................the sweat of the ppl who prepares it at the road side stalls.......Now you know where that extra zing in the taste comes from.

Re: Vada Pavs goes global

vada pav is definitely not healthy but bhel is just tomatoes, potatoes, onions and puffed rice + sev...there's nothing too fattening in it right?

Re: Vada Pavs goes global

:CareBear: lying big time, you're just trying to gross me out. It's not gonna work:p

Re: Vada Pavs goes global

No its not fattening...you right...although there is a fried puri like ingredient and broken into bits. But I meant healthy in a balanced diet kind of way. You know greens proteins etc. Of course you may get protiens if some flies from your outdoor food stall decide to drop in:D

Re: Vada Pavs goes global

aly-sam

yupe, flies add to that extra taste of street food! and yes as you said, proteins!
:p what you thought i live in Kaziranga National Park??! :P
yupe we get authentic pao vaji, bhel puri, vada pao,pani-puri/gol-gappa(itz called Fuchka here) etc here too. just that the first ones' the most popular along with the pani-puris!
hhmm..actually, here you will get almost no Assamese cusine !!! Assamese are minority in South Assam. itz all mostly Bengalis,Marwaris,Manipuris,Biharis,Dimasa,Boro and Nepalis with some Punjabis,Kashmiris, ppl from the rest of NE,South Indians and Tibetians around. the Punjabis and Biharis are mostly in the army, though a major junk of Biharis are here as cheap labours.
most Resturants and Street food stalls offer South Indian,Nepali,Tibetan,Punjabi,Mughlai,Hyderabadi,Bengali,Marathi(pao vaji, vada pao et al),Chinese, European,American(Burgers,
Hot Dogs..in short, the junkies) and Far East cusines, so nope, if you ever comeover here, the cusisne wont be that different! Beef and Pork are freely available. you can get Deer,Turles,Tortoise and other protected animals too( yeah yeah, i know itz a crime). But the Nagas can provide you the most variety of meat, starting from Dogs,Jackals,Snails,Foxes,Monkey,Buffalos,Crows..........
so even if you are from places in tribal Africa or live on Chinese or Far Eastern foods, you wont feel alien here! (though Chinese and Far Eastern cooking dont have Dogs,Foxes Jackals...) and did i mention Fish,Hen(ok, they are now being subjected to a Genocide over here),Mutton and Sheep/Lamb???

Indopak, well what Rocking Vibes said is true! next time in India, open your eyes when the stall wallah actually makes the food! you may find the stall wallah's precious sweats slowly draining into the mixture!! and if the man incidently has a running nose then..well you can very well imagine that !

Re: Vada Pavs goes global

^^:) Wow thanks for all that great info **Pallavpotter **Its interesting to learn about different cultures. Amazing how assamese are minority in S Assam. So is this nagalad or somethin? cos you mentioned nagas and I remembered I saw a dance (long time ago) from nagaland.

Ha Ha ...guess what I am from tribal africa (tribal unfortunately being the operative word). So I guess I can identify with the different meats. We have a very famous restaraunt called the Carnivore (yeah sucks if you are a vegetarian) and they serve crocodile, antelope, ostrich, giraffe and zebra amongst the normal meats. Its an eat all you can restaraunt. On each table is a little white flag. Basically waiters rotate amongst tables carrying large skewers of the meats and they keep serving you until your table puts up the little white flag signifying "had enough..we surrender" and you literally roll out of the restaraunt.

But no dogs jackal monkeys etc. And as for tortoises...imagine having lived for close to 300 years only to end up in someones digestive tract!! :( And poor lil turtles they so cute how could anyone eat them??

Re: Vada Pavs goes global

Rocking Vibes used so much yucky detail in terms the sweat dripping and the noses running that…ok lemme just go and throw up now. Of what I saw when they were preparing, nobody’s nose was running or was their sweat dripping…there might have been some flies and all but so what!!

Never ate from the road side stalls because after that one time when I did do that I got bigtime sick so I guess I know the reason why now:crying:…it’s just not right!!! Hey i’m just glad that all those malls are coming up in India with the food stalls.

Re: Vada Pavs goes global

oh, the present day S Assam was a part of the former Greater Bengal, so there ought to be a Bengali majority. historically, during the ancient times, it was the place where the Kacharis took refuge and finally made it their new home when the Tai Ahoms invaded them. PLUS the constant illegal migration of Bangladeshis contribute to the minority of Assamese ppl.
and nope, Nagaland's far away from here!! actually here you would actually feel like in Bengal instead of in NE!

oh, so you are an Indian living in Africa, or actually a African??? if you are one, then i am sorry, i used the word 'Tribal' !
crocodile, antelope, ostrich, giraffe and zebra ,,O_O wow, so doesnt the local government do anything or if it as lame as the police here????
hhmm..actually once i was having tortoise meat and was chewing it, when i remembered its face, especially its loose skin, and i actually had to throw up, so i dont know about the tortoise being cute part!

indopak yupe, the food marts and courts are a boon, but they are eating away some of the local stall wallahs' customers.

Re: Vada Pavs goes global

and aly-sam, i forgot to add, Assamese speaking ppl are a minority in the whole of Assam, though they are the larges community here. that means though they are the largest single language speaking group, they are not the the majority. they count for below 50% of Assam's population.

Re: Vada Pavs goes global

Pallavpotter...hi and thnaks for enlightening on the history.

I am probly more than "living" in africa....my great-grandparents came over and established themselves early last century. Yeah I think we could celebrate our 100 years here. So I guess we kind of grown some sort of roots here. An informal name is Kendians (Kenyan Indians) And tribal is a very sensitive issue here :( more so recently as you probly have seen on news.

As for wild animals, well they only serve the meats of those animals which are plenty in population. So some times of the year you may not get zebra meat as they are sparse and would be allowed to re-populate themselves.
